The wind was blustery, cold and was pulling at the leaves on thetrees, wrenching them loose as if to make the trees give up their last hopes of summer. Those leaves which had been scattered on the ground were now thrown up, doing a ghoulish dance as they were thrown this way and that by the buffeting gusts.

Calliope stood just within the den entrance and sighed. She did not want to leave the comfort of her den, her newborn girls, to feed and yet she knew she would have to soon. Ouranos had been gone a full day and had not yet returned with food and Zagreus could only do so much by himself. She had no idea where the pale twins were right now though they had begun to hunt for themselves at least.

The caramel female padded back and forward, trying to decide wether to go out tonight or leave it until this morning. With the wind as uncertain as it was she would not be able to be assured of staying upwind of her prey... and then there was the fact that most animals would be sensible enough to find shelter in this kind of weather. The start of the rain made up her mind for her as she padded back into the den to her pups. Smiling, she nuzzled at thelittle brown and black bundles of fur.

Ouranos walked beside Anya, dragging part of their catch in his mouth. It had been a large buck, perhaps only in it's second year and not yet wise enough to watch for wolves slinking around in tall grass and dense brush. The pair had brought it down with relative ease, working together in the intuitive way that most wolves do. The fawn wolf was showing the pale she-wolf the way into their packlands. It was a long walk from the den at the bottom to the one at the top but not a hard one if you followed the river course.
They came to the place. It had a rocky entrance, much like the other den, but surrounded by a wider clearing - the better to be able to see others approach from - and with the stream running right by it. The current ran fast and cold here as there was a waterfall just upstream where the valley ended in a steep cliff. It was a well protected area as the only way to it was to walk all the way up through the valley as far as the pack knew.

Ouranos, struggling under the weight of the catch, finally dropped it a little from the entrance. He looked back to Anya reassuringly "We're here."

Every muscle in Anya’s being was pulled taut as she carried a piece of their fallen quarry in her seemingly delicate jaws. Usually a wolf’s stomach would bulge after such a successful kill, in order to bring half digested meat back to the pack members who were either too young or incapable to hunt, but Anya had found herself unable to feast as much as she would have liked; as she felt it would have not been courteous to eat so much before meeting her new alphas. She was careful to pick out the sections that provided the most meat with the littlest bone in order to ease her travels. There was no doubt that smaller carnivorous animals would be eating at the kill, but hopefully there would still be some left for another meal tomorrow.

She walked next to Ouranos, the large male also carrying as much food as possible, and she noticed that he found his way by following the river, and she wondered if this river passed through the middle of the territory. There was a den in the distance, and Anya could smell the milky scent of pups and their mother, as well as the other pack members, and she knew she they were approaching the home of the pack’s leaders. Her tail hung between her ankles and her ears fell to the side in a submissive posture almost mechanically. Anya had joined and left many packs and she knew the customs of greeting a new alpha well.

We’re Here
Ouranos’ familiar voice verified Anya’s thoughts, but she remained silent, the kill in her mouth, in order to directly present it to whomever was in the den. But her light teal eyes looked to the large male, warmly thanking him for accompanying her.

Zagreus padded along the faintly worn trail, the chill wind ruffling his thick, dark fur. Today had not shaped up well, and the fact that he had nothing to show for hours of hunting was the worst of it. Winter was coming, and with it would arrive the ice and the snow. Then food would be a problem, especially with the new pups. Normally optimistic, Zagreus was beginning to become a little concerned about how the winter would shape up. Not that he'd mention it to Calliope. She worried enough as it was despite his assurances normally.

The dark wolf shook his head as he moved. It was just the disappointment of a bad hunt getting to him. They'd be fine over the winter, really. He was just being pessimistic. Zagreus picked up his pace a little. He was getting near to the den entrance now, and he wanted to retreat to the shelter of the den before the wind got worse. As he approached though, he could detect the unfamiliar scent of a wolf he didn't recognise. He speeded up again. Why would there be a strange wolf at the den?

As he reached the clearing of the den, Zagreus paused. He could make out the unfamilar wolf now. She was with Ouranos, and they had some sort of kill between them. At least his family didn't seem to be in any immediate danger. Relaxing somewhat, the charcoal grey wolf made his way out into the clearing and towards his friend.

"...Ouranos?" he asked, a further question hidden in his tone.

Ouranos looked at his friend and alpha and then at the pale coloured female. His eyes, a glimmering deep green in the faded light, exuded calm and beseeched her not to worry. "Zagreus, this is Anya. She wishes to join with us... she is a good and willing hunter!" he spoke all of this with perhaps less calm than he evinced, hoping his friend would understand that he wished for this female not to be turned away, that he couldn't stand that.
His tail gave a few, slightly pathetic, wags in a puppyish manner as if asking to be forgiven for something bad he had done. At least this time he hadn't brought back another hungry mouth. He hadn't really thought, until this long moment, about the fact that his alpha pair might reject Anya but now it gnawed as he awaited their reply.

He could smell milk, blood. Calliope had birthed her pups, then? Ouranos wasn't sure if that would work in Anya's favour or against it.

Calliope had come to the entrance of the den once more, having heard the commotion. She stood silently, looking at her mate uneasily. She had just given birth to her litter and was worried about this strange lone female. Ouranos was nt the best judge of character and would be anybody's friend given the chance. She was fond of the pale wolf now but didn't entirely trust his judgement.

On the other hand, this female was a hunter, not an extra hungry mouth, and they could do with all the adults avaliable.

The alpha female kept her thoughts to herself for the moment, knowing her mate might be a better arbiter of a non judgemental opinion.

Anya’s body remained calm, her breathing quiet as she watched the alpha male and female approach quickly in concern for what ever lay in the den guarded by the amber she wolf. Anya’s glance avoided contact with the superiors as she dipped her head, took a delicate step forward and gingerly placed the part of their kill on the ground. Her movements were slow and graceful; to hide any trace of nervousness or uncertainty she might be concealing. Her ears laid back in a non threatening manner, and her tail hung limply between her ankles. She took a step back, returning from presenting her gift to the alpha female, and spoke with ease, “Hello,” she said after her introduction from Ouranos, nodding her head, and waiting for a response from the two leaders of the small pack.

Zagreus gazed at Ouranos for a moment before shifting his attention to Anya, studying the pale coloured female quietly as she offered the kill to Calliope. Ouranos' feelings weren't hard to spot. From his tone alone, Zagreus knew that he was fervently hoping that Anya would be accepted. However, Zag had no knowledge at all of this new female. Adult wolves were different from pups. They were a potential danger, especially with a newborn litter near.

The dark wolf cast a glance over at his mate, catching her eyes briefly. Calliope didn't seem to be immediately hostile, and if, as Ouranos said, Anya was a good hunter, she could be a great help for the coming winter months. He turned his attention back to Anya, watching the way she acted for a moment more. He didn't see anything that was concerning, and he trusted his friend. Ouranos was friendly to the point of being oblivious sometimes, but he would never have brought back anyone he thought would be a danger to the pups or the rest of the pack. Zagreus was willing to give the pale female a chance, at least.

The dark alpha stepped forward. He wanted to talk to the female first before he made up his mind completely. "Hello Anya," he replied. "Where is it that you are from?" he asked, his manner seeming fairly cordial. It seemed a good place to start.

The female wolf's manner in offering the kill to her, her movements and her posture all were heartily approved of in Calliope's eyes. She liked good manners and behavior and the pale she wolf seemed to have both. It was one little tick of approval on her mental checklist towards Anya. The large offering of food was another.
As her mate spoke to the female showing that he, too, found her not completely threatening Calliope's muscles untensed a little and she looked more closely at Anya. She was small, smaller than Calliope who was not that large. Pale, too. In fact when she looked closer she saw that the female could easily be taken for Ouranos' sibling. A little more greyish, perhaps, none of the pale fawny tone the large male wolf had but similar nonetheless. Their blue-green eyes, too, seemed a match. Calliope was somewhat amused at this resemblance but kept her thoughts locked in, only outwardly portraying the wary but ready mother and female alpha of her small pack.

That Zag wanted to speak to her gave Ouranos' heart a little hope. He turned to Anya, his eyes trying to give her unspoken encouragement as he moved a little closer as if to support what she would say.
He was all confidence again, sure that Zagreus must have seen that she was no threat - that she'd be a good addition to their small clan. It was true, as the alpha's thought, that he'd befriend anyone that would let him and was none too canny but he would not have brought this female back had he not felt that she was 'right'.
He never could explain that feeling but it had given him the confidence to bring her back. She had seemed, to him, a friendly, confidant wolf and a good hunter. He hadn't really realised that he also had another reason he'd have liked her to stay around - it was something he just wasn't used to thinking about.

User ImageUser ImageHer pale and fragile face gave a brief smile as she felt the two leaders begin to accept her. She knew the inherent dangers of a lone wolf entering a new pack, especially a pack with a new born litter, and she would be sure to keep her distance from the alpha female’s den in order to prove her own worth and trustfulness. The dark alpha spoke to her and she looked to him, but her clear and bright teal eyes fell through him. This was a ritual all wolves did to avoided confrontation with a new leader, with any leader, and the small female was an avid practice of all wolf rituals. Anya felt the closeness of the large, fawn male beside her and she felt comforted by his the courageous feeling emanating from him. Her scared, porcelain muzzle dipped as she thought about the alpha’s question, she had had many, many homes previous to her last but felt the need to only mention her previous pack lands to avoid any questioning of a potential criminal record.

“I am originally from the far south, but recently I have departed from the Outrider’s pack lands that Phib controls by the ocean, He is a very large, black, scarred male traveling with a smaller gray female, do you know him?” For a young wolf it was unusual that Anya had come from so many different packs but as most pasts do, hers carried painful memories of departed friends…departed mates. But her voice showed no trace of any doubt and her words were like water. She gave a subtle flick of her silky tail, brushing against Ouranos’ flank to thank him for his confidence.

Zagreus nodded slightly as he listened to Anya. As she spoke, he noted that while she was looking in his direction, she was not actually meeting his gaze. You could tell a lot from a wolf by its body language, and he had been watching her since her arrival.

She was being deliberately deferential and trying to appear non-confrontational. He suspected her actions would appease Calliope, who had a liking for things to be 'proper'. From what he had seen so far, there was nothing to give him extra cause for concern either. She seemed to be genuine. Zagreus was glad for that; he would have hated to see Ouranos being deceived by somebody that he felt was a friend.

When Anya asked about Phib, the dark alpha shook his head. "I have not travelled through the southern lands much, and I don't think I know this wolf you speak of." To be honest, there wasn't much of a chance that he would have known the alpha of whatever pack she came from. He knew from his travels before he came here that there were a number of packs in the area, but he had tried to avoid moving through their lands wherever possible. He and Ouranos had not been looking for a confrontation on their travels.

He glanced at Ouranos for a moment, before looking back to Anya again. "I take it that Ouranos has told you about us already." He smiled faintly, before looking over at Calliope. He was happy to give Anya a chance, but he would not do so without Calliope's acceptance as well. He caught his mate's eyes, the unspoken question clear in his expression.

The alpha female caught her mate's eye, a yellow flicker and nodded her head almost imperceptibly. Although not completely putting her guard down she smiled in her ususal small way and allowed her tail a few friendly wags.

"I have not been south of here, much, either Anya" she pronounced the name a little oddly, not quite used to the clipped short syllables. "Though it would be good if you would tell us the lay of the land, perhaps a little about the other packs there someitmes. So at we don't inadvertantly step on anyones paws..." It really would be good to get a better idea of the pack structurein this area, she thought. Knowing where a pack was and the vague numbers in it was not that useful.

Small yowls and cries came from inside the cave - protesting a lack of milk and warmth. "I had better get back to the little ones..." was all she said, thinking the female would understand her rudeness in leaving. A little anxious for having been away from her pups, the chocolate caramel female turned and padded back into the den. She was a worrier, afterall, and this was her first litter.

Ouranos could hardly hold in his excitement and his tail, a fluffy white bush of winter fur was wagging back and forth happily. He had seen the look between the pair and could only guess that it meant Anya would be accepted. Delighted, at the flick of her tail against him and this probable good news, he leaned over and nuzzled at the back of her neck - the easiest part to reach with her looking down as she was. She seemed a little sad talking about her past again but he imagined that he must seem that way when he talked of his own homeland.
Thinking on Calliop's words, and Zagreus' he recalled "I've met the female of that pack, and that is how I met Anya. They smelled similar and I thought it was the little grey female, Amélie whom I had spoken to and went to meet her but found Anya. I'm glad I did..." He snuck a sideways glance at this other petite female. "She is kind, shy. I have not met her mate, though."
The large fawny-white male looked at his friend, grinning lopsidedly, his eyes begging for what he knew would be a favorable response.

“That is unfortunate,” she began to speak, “Phib is a truly outstanding wolf.” And he was, having her saved her life from freezing in the harsh northern climate, promoting her to beta, giving her a land to live and thrive off of. Her respect and loyalty to the bear-like wolf was never yielding and someday she would return to report back to him of her new beginnings. She missed his mate, Amélie, as well. The two small female had become friends, and she found great strength in the ashen seer, even if her body was weak. Anya gave a shy look, “He has told much about you two to me on the journey to this place.” The amber alpha then asked about the different territories within the land. The milky she wolf provided a brief summary “Most packs are friendly. Phib’s pack is to the south-east, while Hige’s pack is to the east of Phib’s. They are friendly allies. There is an enemy pack: Phantom’s. I don’t know much about them, where their pack is, or even if their leader is still alive. Also, there are a few scattered hidden packs that remain quiet.” She stopped her summary as the alpha female spoke again.

Her slight grin turned into a genuine smile, her fragile chin lifting only slightly as she watched Calliope return to her tiny pups. Sounds of cooing and hushing came from the den as the alpha female hushed and fed them. Motherhood was always such a joy to observe and had always brought great happiness and pride to any pack. She quickly brought her attention back to the large, charcoal male, however her ears twisted to acknowledge Ouranos. She felt the nuzzle on the back of her neck and her exotic eyes closed in a cat-like fashion, her voice almost purring.

Zagreus nodded, listening to Anya as she spoke of the packs nearby. Mentally, he filed away the information, as it was good to know about your neighbours. The fact that most of them were friendly was good news. Ouranos' words were reassuring too. Zagreus smiled a little.

"Then I hope to meet this Phib sometime then." Hopefully on friendly terms.. he thought, leaving his afterthought unspoken. He had no wish to cause trouble with the neighbouring packlands. Their own pack was too small for those kind of relations. Plus, Zagreus preferred negotiation to all out fighting.

Catching Calliope's almost invisible nod, Zagreus returned it before turning back to Anya again. He smiled faintly at her.

"As Ouranos has no doubt told you, we are a small pack with rather a lot of tiny mouths to feed. You are welcome to stay with us - another hunter would be most appreciated, and you sound like you would get along well with us here."

His gaze flickered to Ouranos before heading back to Anya again. "Ouranos, would you like to show Anya around the area?" he asked, his smile broadening. The pair did seem rather friendly already.

Ouranos's tail shuffed back and forward even faster than before, his large frame almost being pulled each way with it. He turned back to Anya and grinned "I told you they would like you". His attitude was a little simplistic, puppyish perhaps, but noone could doubt that he genuinely believed in the truth of what he said. They'd already seen most of the south of the territory in getting here but Ouranos was happy to show her around this strange den site a little further if she'd like and he said so to his small, pale companion.

First, though, Ouranos offered to take in the meat. Calliope was feeding her pups but would need her own sustenance afterwards and he was sure the little black female and the albino twins would happily partake in any food presented to them.

"Anya... I'm glad you're going to be here.." he said softly as he moved to pick up the piece he had been carrying once more.

She had delivered the gift of meat to the alphas and had been accepted as a member of the pack. Her duties now, were to care for them as if they were her blood relatives. The young adult was filled with courage, having been bestowed of protecting and securing the life of the newborns as well as with the rest of her pack. She had been wandering for so long; was she finally on the last page of her story?

Hardly, but at least now Anya felt a sense of place she longed for during her time in the Outriders. “Thank you,” she said earnestly to the dark alpha male with a hint of excitement on her breath. Winter would be coming soon and she would hunt to her limits to provide for the pack. She dipped her muzzle and then turned to Ouranos as he brought his own prize to the alpha female. Her tail lifted and wagged when it had once been limp and expressionless and a smile fell upon her feminine maw. She was home.
