I always feel like I am showing off in topics like these...

Well, hell. Maybe I am.

I've been studying Japanese for about 3 months. I am completely self-taught; I only use books that I have purchased for myself.

I know hiragana and katakana alphabets, as well as 1st grade kanji. I know a few other random kanji, as well.

I am currently working on building my vocabulary. Wouldn't be able to count the number of words I know all together...probably rounding around 50+. Relatively low. ><

I suppose I am pretty close to being fluent...I can understand some conversations, but they are all lower level stuff. And adjusting to the different dialects is really difficult. xP

Anyway. I am hoping to move to Japan in...probably an excess of 5 years. I am taking an Information Tech class right now, although I plan on going to college for teaching, as well. Translator or teacher...thats my plan for when I ship out. I know the demand for English teachers are really high, so wish me luck. ^^

I had (somewhat boring) classes for half a year and was teaching myself after this for 4 years...
I'm far from speaking Japanese, though, so my answer to the poll was "no".
No teacher = noone to have the first talks with;

But...
I know all the Hiragana and Katakana, can read and write them fluent...
I know a few (maybe 100, I don't know) Kanji, their reading and meaning...
I understand some words (in every song I listen to I can understand about 35 words not counting grammar)...
I know the basics (and maybe a bit more) about the grammar...
...and I know where to look for everything I don't know biggrin

...so I can translate almost everything from Japanese into a language I'm fluent in (i.e. German and English), but - sadly - not back.
I consider a language "fluent", if I can type random texts like this one without using any dictionary and can talk to people on the street randomly, without thinking hard.

俺は君たちをすきだ♥
このだらだらを笑え!

...

Ah...
...but hey, if here are people who are really fluent in Japanese or have Japanese as their native language - wouldn't it be great to make up some kind of funny Japanese lessons (maybe teaching "everyday speech" instead of the polite things you learn in Japanese classes)?
Just if you want and can share your time for this, of course.

...

In another thread someone told about the differences between Kansai language and the language you learn at classes here. I think themes like this are very interesting.
I'd love to know a bit more Kansai speech biggrin

I can help with the more modern, non-polite speech. I'm not a native speaker, obviously sweatdrop But..cha'know.

Unfortunately, I don't know much about the dialects. As I said, they take a while to get use to. xp

Aiko-san has some threads in the JSG on dialects. You can learn Tokyo-ben, Osaka-ben, nagoya-ben. biggrin

I'm okay I guess. I don't know the exact number of words I know but About 100+ is all I can say. Not much though.

I know all 80 of grade 1 kanji and I need to learn 18 more kanji until I know both grade 1 and 2 kanji. (I know about 222 kanji now biggrin yay!)

Grammar... harder to say, I know how to change adjectives into adverbs. And sentence patterns, (trying to learn copmarative) and then a few particles へ、が、を、で、は、の、に. but there's a lot to learn sad

Verbs- normal-polite of desu, present, past, negative, negative past, and I know present and past of informal desu. I know masu (present, past, etc...) and I know base 1 with the add-on thing(forget what it's called) nai, naide, naide kudasai. And base ending 4 with ba.

I can sort of speak it but I need to learn more. Writing though is easier. Don't need intonations.

I know katakana and hiragana too.

I have no teacher, for now. Next semester my school is letting me take a spare and take Japanese at another school and take an independent course for my spare. biggrin Other than that I use books I bought to learn.

I have been learning Japanese when I was in high school. I later took classes at college. As of now, I am learning it on my own.
