In a large field surrounded by forest stood a slim woman, gazing at a cave set into the low hillside in front of her. A light breeze tossed her short, fawn-colored hair and made her deep blue blouse and sturdy forest-green pants ripple. A worn leather backpack and hiking boots completed her outfit.

"Hey, Kailind, is this it?" a voice asked from behind her.

The woman looked over her shoulder at the sound of her name. Kailind's amber eyes danced with delight as she grinned at the scarlet and gold female European kyn standing behind her.

"Yup, Tetania, this is it. Welcome to our new home," she replied merrily. "Let's go in and take a look around."

The fledgling kyn nodded happily, then bent her neck down to pick up a rope with her teeth. As she walked forward she used the rope to pull a small cart behind her. (It was very small; Kailind could have pulled the cart herself, but the somewhat eager-to-please kyn had insisted.)

The two walked through the opening, which had a grassy overhang above it. The series of chambers inside may not have been the largest cave system out there, but it was plenty big enough for a human and a growing kyn, with room for a few more. The chamber immediately inside was rather wide and had several smaller ones branching out from it's sides and back. Kailind turned left immediately inside the entrance and walked into one of the smallest chambers.

"This'll be my room; you can find any of the other ones you like," she told her kyn. Tetania immediately dropped the rope and started exploring.

The room Kailind entered was about the size of a large bedroom. Though it was mostly bare, the solid rock floor was swept and washed clean, and the walls, which were mostly rock with dirt holding them together, were smoothed neatly. The only objects in the room were the tools used to neaten the room: a broom, a bucket and a large sponge, all of which were piled in a corner.

Kailind dropped her backpack on the floor, then returned to the main chamber to get the other contents of the cart. After she transfered the rest of her belongings into the room, (which didn't take long) she went hunting for Tetania. It didn't take long to find her kyn, who was in the chamber right next to Kailind's room. Hearing her rider walk in, the brightly-colored European looked up from her inspection of the chamber.

"Can I have this one?" she asked eagerly.

The woman chuckled at her kyn's enthusiasm and replied, "Of course! If you like it that much, it's yours."

Tetania wiggled excitedly and returned to inspecting the chamber. She soon noticed a fault to the room, however.

"It doesn't have enough sand," she told her rider plaintively.

Kailind laughed at the observation. “That’s easily fixed,” she told the kyn. “Come on, there’s a stream not far from here where we can get more. As she turned to head out of the cave, the growing kyn bounded past her with all the enthusiasm of an overgrown puppy, despite the fact that she was as big as a pony.

Kailind stopped into her room to grab the bucket and also picked up a much larger bucket from the cart before running outside after her kyn.

Kailind trotted off across the clearing, her kyn at her heels. As the woman approached a small path through the forest, likely formed by deer or other forest creatures, Tetania bounded past her and darted down the path. Kailind chuckled and followed; she had no trouble following the once-narrow path now that her kyn had blazed a wide trail for her.

It wasn't long before the human caught up with her kyn, who had stopped at the edge of a stream. It was wide, slow and fairly shallow at the portion near the path, but a few turns downstream it widened and deepened into an area that was too small to be a pond, but formed a sizable pool. Tetania was crouched at the stream's edge, staring at the water striders skitting across the surface and a number of tiny silver fish that flashed through the water.

Kailind observed the scene for a moment, then grinned mischievously. She quietly put down her buckets, then tiptoed up to the kyn from behind. She was almost on Tetania's tail when...

"BOO!"

Kailind stumbled backwards, then fell over in surprise. An instant before, Tetenia had whirled around and cried out, startling her rider. After the shock had warn off, Kailind started laughing uncontrollably, and her lively european joined in.

"I guess I wasn't as sneaky as I thought I was, eh?" Kailind eventually said, wiping tears of myrth from her eyes.

"Of course not; how can you sneak up on me when I always know where you are?" Tetania replied. Feeling satisfied with herself, she turned back to the stream and considered it for a moment before leaping into the air. She clumsily glided a short distance before making a crash-landing into the pool.

Glad that she was far enough away that she only felt a few drops of the resulting splash, Kailind went to retrieve her buckets before returning to the bank of the stream. She bent down and began filling the buckets from a generous deposit of silt and sand along one curve of the stream while her kyn played happily in the stream. Glancing up to check on her kyn, the woman noticed that the pool was deep enough that the water almost came up to Tetania's shoulders.

When the buckets her full, she dusted off her hands and called, "Hey Tetania, if you want sand in your den you'd better help carry it." Picking up the smaller bucket for herself, she waited for her kyn.

Tetania was reluctant to leave the water, and stubbornly splashed around a moment more before climbing out of the water and trotting over to her rider. As the kyn carefully picked up the bucket's handle in her teeth, Kailind turned and headed back up the path toward their den.
