The Book of Three
by: Lloyd Alexander
You may have heard of the Disney full length feature animated film called The Black Cauldron. What you probably do not know is that The Black Cauldron is an adaptation of two books from the Prydian Series, The Book of Three and the Black Cauldron.

In The Book of Three, the first in the Prydian Series, we join Taran, the young ward of Dallben, a powerful magician, and keeper of Hen Wen, the kingdoms only oracle pig. Taran is a headstrong boy and longs for adventure beyond the gates of Caer Dallben, the home of his caretaker. He gets a bit more than he bargained for when the Horned King himself comes after Hen Wen and the pig flees for her life. Taran races off after the pig and into the very heart of danger. Along the way, he meets a group of delightful companions including, Gurgi, a dog like beast who often puts his stomach before all else, Eilonwy a stubborn princess stolen away from home by a tricky sorceress, Fflewddur Flam, a royal king that would much rather be a bard, and Doli, an unfortunate member of the fairy folk that is unable to turn invisible.

Lloyd Alexander creates a vivid, detailed world in The Book of Three, it won several awards in its time and is a Yearling classic. I highly recommend this book and its sequels, The Black Cauldron, The Castle of Lyre, Taran the Wanderer, & The High King.

You may easilly find this series at your local library or book store.

Manga Review!

The first manga review I wish to tackle is Godchild, by Kaori Yuki. Some of you may remember that name as the person who did the very popular Angel Sanctuary. That means two things, one the art style and quality is amazing, two, we can expect many twists and turns in this little gem.

Godchild is the continuing story of Cain Hargreaves, (don't worry, the first installment, Cain Saga is coming out soon) the young, slightly eccentric heir of the Hargreves fortune. Cain fancies himself a young detective in his own rite and is darned good at it too. He is also a collector of poisons and is very attached to his man servant, Riff and his little half-sister, Mary Weather. Both of these (somewhat unhealthy) attachments are probably due to the abuse he endured as a child at the hands of his father. The story is set in late 19th Century England and it is a gothic tale if I have ever seen one. Cain is just cold enough to be believable and the vulnerable sides he shows when with Riff and Mary Weather will have you rooting for him all the way.
In the shadows, however, an organization called Delilah lurks in the shadows, led by a sinister figure from young Cains past...
Can Cain survive with his sanity intact or will he become as insane as his father?

I HIGHLY recommend this manga! It started out in the magazine Shojo Beat and quickly outgrew it! You can now find several of the manga at your local book store.

Two to start with that I did somewhere else. I'll do another soon if the responce is good. Nice to see this guild back up and kicking!

Treasure Island

This book is truly a classic. The book is by Robert Louis Stevenson and was written in remembrance of the swashbuckling days of adventure on the high seas. The story centers around young Jim Hawkins, a plucky lad with a heart of gold. His parents own and run The Admiral Benbow a tavern and inn set near a small port. Jim's days are filled with helping his parents run the inn and childhood adventures until an old captain comes to stay at the inn. His name is Billy Bones and through him, Jim is wisked off to Treasure Island, a journey filled with excitement, joy, betrayal, and incredible danger. At the end of it all, lies an a kings ransom in pirate gold...

The book is narrated by Jim and features such characters as Long John Silver, a one legged ships cook that may just have a finger in every pie, Doctor Livesey, a very kind man and an old family friend of the Hawkins, Squire Trelawney, a stubborn nobleman who can't keep his mouth shut, Captain Smollet, a no-nonsense man of the sea, and Ben Gunn, a former pirate marooned on Treasure Island.

This is one of my all time favorite books. I have re-read it hundreds of times and am still not sick of it. The characters are believable, the environment is vivid, and the pace of the story is gripping. If you read any classic book, read this one. It will be well worth your time.

TO THE HESITATING PURCHASER

If sailor tales to sailor tunes,

Storm and adventure, heat and cold,

If schooners, islands, and maroons,

And buccaneers, and buried gold,

And all the old romance, retold

Exactly in the ancient way,

Can please, as me they pleased of old,

The wiser youngsters of today:

--So be it, and fall on! If not,

If studious youth no longer crave,

His ancient appetites forgot,

Kingston, or Ballantyne the brave,

Or Cooper of the wood and wave:

So be it, also! And may I

And all my pirates share the grave

Where these and their creations lie!
