how do you distinguish female and male in characters? whenever i draw a guy, he turns out looking feminine. i need tips on what makes a male character male and what maks a female character female, including facial features and the way their bodies are built. if you could contribute anything i'd appreciate it.

Well, males generally have a squarer jaw, bigger/more defined nose, umm... bushier eyebrows? XD
Girl's faces are more slender and pointed, same with nose...
That's all I can really think of right now. ninja

I have the exact opposite problem gonk
all my men look like women.
Men are just blockier. Use straight lines and angles, and tall faces

i think the best thing you can do for yourself is draw from life. also, there are a lot of great books with anatomy and movement references for the artist. i can't think of any off of the top of my head, which makes the comment a lot less useful, but you know.

Men's features can be more defined than a womans. That is, you can draw more of the lines on the face...etc. Men's faces also tend to be longer and certain features can be bigger but they dont all have to be. For example, a male chracter can have smal nose eyes and mouth, but a larger chin. There are also certain feature you emphasize or define more on women than men, such as eyelashes, eye lids and lips.
i agree with the eyebrow thing though. Men grow more hair, so eyebrows, side burns facial hair...all that tend to be...more.

I use more squares when drawing men.
Also, don't be afraid to throw some lines on the face. If you use that cartoonish method of minimizing facial detail it comes out feminine because it looks sort of like they are too smooth and wearing foundation. Try not to minimize the nose especially.
