The Arancar receives the hits by the girl directly into her chest and so she receives a small wound into her core. Rising her hand to laugh she didn't really manage to see the transformation of Megumi who finds himself behind her. As Megumi was about to fire his Cero, the little Arancar uses her ball to counter attack the damage dealt by his cero, however as expected this was not enough to block his Cero completely. Blood starts to come out of her whole body as she starts to take a few steps backward one by one almost falling to the ground. An evil look forms on her face as she rises her hands to open a Garganta behind her. Entering it the girl continues to breath harder and harder before saying her final words: "You might be powerful...but you are nothing but a puppet controlled by him...you should take his soul over...foolish little hollow !" With these words she disappears inside the garganta which quickly closes in the open space.

The grinning woman turns her head..so much life to take..so much to destroy! She gazes at her sword..not released yet. She frowns and sighs. Her head shakes, and she hoists the blade over her shoulder with a disgruntled look. So pathetic.
::..out. Go away.::
"What? The hell?"
::..Done here. AWAY!::
"Nuh...what are you...! YOu're too weak, you can't!"
But the body betrays the protest...as Megumi's hand grips the mask on the inside near the eye..and starts to pull..the hollow-megumi screams in rage as she fights with the will of her other half..but Megumi only cares about saving Ran right now..and she'll die if left in the state she's in..there's a final spiritual tug of war..then a shriek of indignance as the mask is torn off and shattered..and Megumi falls near Ran..reaching his hand to hers.
..still, it doesn't take long. More members of the house guard come to find Megumi..since the witnesses to his change are all dead, they can't find any reason not to pick up him and the other student and carry them to the medical ward to be treated. The guard in the fields will double, and invaders and trespassers will be looked at from here on in with much more scrutiny.

And he leads Ran to this place, taking her hand and into the estate, despite the fact everyone's sleeping. He'll put her up in his room, he doesn't mind sleeping on floor mats, really. He sets her gently down in his own bed, and he flops down on the floor mats. With a yawn, he finds himself falling to rest as well..shifting souls is..hard on the bod..err..sou..errr. Person. Yeah.

Megumi comes home for the first time in a while. He doesn't speak to the guards as he enters, and even when his mother smiles and runs to him, he gently pushes her away, much to her confusion. He walks up the stairs to the family chambers, and past that hallway, he goes into the sealed documents room, and closes himself off. He leaves a notice that he doesn't wish to be disturbed, and has a guard posted out in front of the door to the sealed documents room.
Slowly, he begins to read. He picks up the first book, going over things. The nature of hollows as known by the shinigami..the behavior of souls when they enter a darker state..he needs to know everything he can about hollows, and about other souls. The study begins..

His eyes skim over the book..reading the pages as he goes along, skimming them bit by bit. So far, with just this one book, he hasn't learned anything he doesn't already know. Hollows hunger, and do so eternally until buried..they are possessed of a malevolence that causes them to destroy whatever they touch..
...bah. There's nothing in this simple book for him. Still, he continues to read on. He's not going to leave it unfinished just because it's the basics. He needs to go over everything just to make sure he knows what he believes he knows. He blinks then, looking down at the book..there's a footnote..
'The ability to transcend the hollow state has been demonstrated by some few exceptional hollows, leading to the induction of shinigami powers in these hybrids. While Central has named them 'Arrancar' for lack of a better word, there is little any of us know. According to Sotaicho Yamamoto, ninety percent of them are weak, and unable to form complete powers, but a rare few become strong enough to challenge Shinigami. They seem attracted to other hollows or unusual beings..'
That was the thing that came to him. He stops reading for a moment, reflecting on that. Other hollows..unusual beings...he sighs. There was a hollow inside of him. His mother had told him about what happened, and now with all that was happening..well. He kept reading on. He would learn..

Megumi knew that at best, he'd find fragmented information here. Even with the prestige of his family, there were going to be things missing. The R&D division would have the best records, and they were attached to Central as far as he knew. He understood getting into their records would be impossible for him. He reflects that most likely, the family heads of the Great Families, his family, and maybe some of the other noble families that produced Shinigami were aware of Arrancar, at least. Even if they didn't know what all they could do, they were aware of their existence.
Megumi sets the book down, and stands, reaching for the next one. He begins going through it, bit by bit. Hollows in history, the Arrancar in recent years..all the information his family had on various kinds of hollows, what little they had on the Arrancar..but still he didn't see anything about what he was. Arrancar, according to the book, where hollows who went over the line and gained Shinigami powers..but..he was different. Shinrei had called them 'Vizard'. He wasn't seeing anything about them in these books. Still, he went over the second book..page by page..reading..increasing his knowledge slowly.

'We do not know what powers Arrancar have beyond the ability to fight in a manner similar to Shinigami. We know that they have high levels of defense, and that they produce reiatsu like Shinigami do. Apparently some can use Cero, due to hollow traits but this is all we know.'
That doesn't help. That one he fought had some kind of odd power..and it was a mighty power. He continues reading. He doesn't know if they can use Kidou..or any similar power. He assumes they might be able to if they tap into their Shinigami abilities. He is uncertain. Finishing this second book, he stands and sets it on the desk he sits at, and walks to the shelf, picking up a book on Shinigami history, and begins to read it as well.
Slowly, he begins to understand the general knowledge of the Shinigami; their skills, their purpose, and what it is they stand for. Over the next few minutes, he spends time in this third book, learning what it is he's striving for..before, it had just been some great goal..but now..now he's beginning to realize it's far more than just that. It's also a means to an end; if he discovers more..he will learn more about himself..

He flips the pages as he goes..keeping his eyes glued to the book. True, there isn't any information that's secret in this book or any such thing..but it's the fact it's something he didn't know that draws him. Bit by bit, he's beginning to understand what it is he's reaching for; and why it is he wants to reach for it. Shinigami grow in power greatly over normal souls. With that power, he can protect those weaker than himself. He can keep safe all those who might suffer, like his own family suffered. He knows that in the scheme of things, the nobility is supposed to keep themselves seperate from the common man..but..
He sighs again, as he reads the book. He had always been too kind, his uncle had said. Even in his worst moments, Megumi had always been gentle with those beneath his station. He had despaired that the young feminine man would ever become a strong warrior because of his kindness to others. But maybe, Megumi muses to himself, it was that very thing that would make him stronger. A strong desire to keep others safe. And he reads..

As time passed, and he read through, he closes the third book and moves on to the fourth. He's always been a fast reader, and this was no exception. He wanted to find some information about these 'Vizard' he was supposedly a part of..but he just hasn't found anything on it in his family's archives. Most likely, only the Four Great Families would have something with information about them. He surmises, just from his own experience..and Shinrei's speaking, that Vizard are shinigami first. Beyond that..he has no idea how hollows get inside Shinigami.
Opening this newest book, he muses, reading about the various zanpakutou in Shinigami history. Hm. It seems that certain types are more rare..dual weapons are hard to come by, and non-sword types are also less common. Especially rare as far as he understands by reading, are weapons that are already not swords in their basic form. It seems there aren't many like that..

Megumi continues to flip pages, and he muses, as he reads. Much he did not know..yes, there is so much he has to learn. What, really, was he, and who was he? So many questions. Coupled with a lot of his self-doubts of late, there were so many things he wanted to ask..but who could he ask? There wasn't anyone he could turn to, that would know.
There was nothing in this book to tell him anything. He sets it down, and walks the shelves..thumbing through various title names. Sighing, he just hits a bookcase..lightly..and it thumbs back against the wall. Hey. That was an odd sound for wood. He blinks then, and pulls one of the bookcases aside..and he taps the wall. Once..twice..and he shoves. No..there. Again he shoves..and the wall cracks somewhat..but not to break..to move. Sliding it aside, he enters another room..closing the wall behind him.
"This place..I wonder what it's doing here?"

Megumi walks to what looks like a small desk..there are a few bookshelves here, as well. It looks like a sealed up room..that someone wanted to remain a secret. Or at least be hard to find. He opens the dusty old desk, taking out what seems to be a very old book..and he opens it..flipping pages until they fall on one that catches his eye..
"X Month, X Day: I remember hearing a voice in the distance, so long ago. It was a time when I was young, and I still had the hope I would be able to find something that was worth holding on to. I was wrong. Perhaps it was simply because I was unable to give all of myself, even that which was frightful and dark. Perhaps it was because in the end, it simply wasn't meant to be.
I don't ever remember a time when I was free of doubt or guilt of one kind or another. Still, the things that I've done will always bleed over to those that I am close to, or that I touch. I have abandoned everyone who has ever tried to be there for me, because I felt abandoned a long time ago. I guess maybe I made myself an island..and a lonely one at that.
I will leave this old book here for you, who has inherited my legacy. Your dreams may be haunted..your past may be full of misunderstanding..and in a way, that is my fault. Through one another, perhaps we may both find redemption..and absolution. Know that no matter what any world puts you through, the most important thing is a heart. Don't lose it to anyone. Not yourself. Not what was left behind. I made that mistake and it has haunted me to the end of my days.
Protect those you care for. Never forget what it means to use yourself to shield those weaker than you. In the greatest despair, hope is the hardest, and greatest thing to find. Your questions will be answered, I swear. Until then..if you are reading this..be strong. I promise, you will find others who will ease your pain. To be alone is to die..but to be forgotten is worse than death. Yours always, in memory and spirit;

Megumi can't help but know for some reason..that the message was directed to him..but who could leave such a thing in his manor? The book looks like it had been back here in this desk for ages..it seemed much older than even he himself. Was his birth...planned? He sighs..and just touches the book..then blinks. Flipping to the back, he looks down at a picture..a piece of artwork.
It's a woman. A red haired woman, and a man with white hair. The backdrop looks like where the image of his inner world is..and the two look so happy together. Why then, does he feel such a sadness, gazing at the two of them? He closes the book quickly, and sets it back where he found it. For some strange reason..he doesn't want to see that picture again..though the woman..she resembles Umeki very much..

Megumi blinks, closing the book..and he turns his head..cocking it to one side, before narrowing his eyes..
"It's faint..but even with my senses..that reiatsu is.."
And he pockets the book, pushes the wall panel, and shoves the bookcase back against it, before stepping out of the old sealed records room. Nodding to the guard he'd posted, he takes off running, out of the house past his sister who'd just come out of her room..and on the way to the school. He could run faster than a carriage would take him, and now's not the time to worry about convenience. No, something was..wrong.
