Well because of the holiday weekend a lot of comic stores had to wait a day before putting out the new stuff, so what did YOU get?
I have yet to go get the new releases but I went out a couple days ago and bought;
Spellbinders 1-3
and,
Uncanny X-Men #255 - the issue where Destiny dies.

Haven't got in this week yet, but when I do tomorrow the following will be mine... Intimates #8 JSA #74 Superman Batman #20 Villains United #2 House Of M #1 (Alright, I know...don't hassle me. I know) Marvel Team-Up #9 Uncanny X-Men #460 I'll be having the We3 trade too, since I made more than enough money to cover it through selling on eBay the single issues I got on publication. smile Is Zatanna #2 out this week? I thought it was, but it doesn't seem to be up at http://www.comiclist.com/new.html

Got free at work:
Superman/Batman #19
Holy Hush, Batman! Jeph Loeb is such a shitty writer that he practically phones in this month's issue, where he uses safety scissors and white paste to swap out Batman for Supergirl, "Jason Todd" for "Barbara Gordon", and The Riddler for Luthor/Calculator. Also no Catwoman. Bonus "points" for lame Poison Ivy kissing Kara, Churchill's continually lame amalgam of Liefield and Turner that likely gave Ivy frostbite on her a** (since it got absolutely no coverage whatsoever), and my continued disgust at Kara's ***** friendly costume. Thanks for nothing, a*****e.
Arana #5
Grabbed this one on a whim because I saw the cover the night before on DeviantART and thought it was cute. Which is exactly what Arana is when it isn't trite, forced, or pandering to the movie crossover audience. Which is about half the time. See I've loathed Fiona Kai Avery since she wrote (and I paid for) the Witchblade: Obakemono graphic novel, which ended up being an amalgam of Journey to the West, Mulan, and the recent Elektra movie pretending to be a feudal Japanese revenge story. Avery's tricks include heaping spoonfulls of cliches, worn out platititudes, and a perky yet annoying young girl for her to fixate on regardless of the fact that she's utterly irrelevant to the plot. Avery uses all these tactics on Arana as well, but I refuse to let her destroy the fun because I like the character, the art, and the idea.
Bought (on the way back from work, after having read the previous comics on the train):
Arana #1
I decided that I actually want to follow the series so I got #1 and will likely get 2-4 next week.
Desolation Jones #1
Picked it up on the strength of Doreen's reccomendation and because it's Warren Ellis' new series. Absolutely hilarious and promises to be another winner. I especially liked the butler for Jones' first client who when asked by (Briton) Jones if he was english due to his accent, he replies that he was in fact from Brooklyn and put on a fake accent to get the job. "Thank ******** for BBC America, hah?" The art is nifty, very gritty and makes excellent use of color, almost as if Alex Maalev discovered the world beyond grey. Williams inexplicably makes Jones look British. Something subtle in his facial structure and expressions that I can't quite place to explain it properly. I'm not sure why Desolation Jones is on Wildstorm instead of Vertigo, but at this point it's just semantics as the cover sports the buzzphrase "suggested for mature readers" and is no less crude than Transmetropolitan.
Superman #217
Apparently every store in the city sold out of #216 before I could get it, leaving me completely devoid of the Superman/Marvel fight, leaving me not happy. To me, 217 was coasting on the wake of Azzarello's run, repeating the themes and reasons for the new Fortress and it's location and throwing in a loose link to OMAC. At least Churchill didn't come near it.
Fables #37
WE GET TO KNOW WHO THE ADVERSARY IS NEXT ISSUE! WE GET TO KNOW WHO THE ADVERSARY IS NEXT ISSUE! WE GET TO KNOW WHO THE ADVERSARY IS NEXT ISSUE! WE GET TO KNOW WHO THE ADVERSARY IS NEXT ISSUE! WE GET TO KNOW WHO THE ADVERSARY IS NEXT ISSUE! *deep breath*
100 Bullets volume one
On the strength of Noraboo's reccomendation, the fact that I don't get Azzarello goodness from Superman anymore, and the fact that there were no copies of Transmetropolitan volume 7, I picked this one up. When Joe Quesada writes "gangsta" on NYX, I want to vomit. When Azzarello does it, it just feels right, like an episode of The Shield. The premise of the comic has been tugging at me for months, I can't tell you how cool I think the idea of a shady secret agent going around giving a person a gun and a hundred bullets to get revenge on the people that wronged them is. The first story was nothing spectacular, but Azzarello's deft touch kept it well out of your typical latino/black gang story with a believable protagonist and none of the awful cliches that come along with it. If I was still in touch with my rap loving friends from high school, I would knock them over the head with this trade and command them to read it.
Matrix Comics volume 2
I like how they did these volumes, but I still feel that the concept was bungled. Yeah it's lovely that the Wachowski brothers wanted to be cool and have their own comic company, but what the ******** is the point when the company that produced your trilogy also owns the best funded and arguably the best known comic book company in the world? Also, why wasn't DC banging down their door to get the rights to any kind of series? If anyone involved were using their brains on this one, there should be at least four volumes on the market right now put out by either Vertigo or Wildstorm with names like Ellis, Simone, Miller, Azzarello, Quitley, and about a dozen others attached. How is it exactly that they did so spectacularily on the animation side, and flopped equally on the comic side? It's inexplicable. In other news, volume two was worth the cover price but not much more. Kaare Andrews' was the standout of the pack for his vibrant art style and the integration of 3d modeling into the comic. I guess being underground and wasting potential makes you that much more hardcore to the indy crowd that likely loathe the movies in the first place.

I hardly buy singles anymore. Bought some trades today though as I was near my store. I'll probably wait till I've finished my finals this semester before reading them though. I just wouldn't be going near the store for a few weeks so I thought I'd just get them now instead of having to go back after exams. Anyway picked up:
Superman: Man of Steel volume 1 JLA: Strength in Numbers JLA: Justice for All New Thunderbolts: One Step Forward

Good picks on those TPBs, Verds. I picked those up recently, too. Today I got
Power Pack #3
and two more JLA trades, whose dire names that only hint slightly at the story I can't remember at the time. However, one of them was the return of the White Martians, and the other one was Morrison's last JLA arc against Mageddon. All good stuff.

Mssr Remy LeBeau Doreen_Green Is Zatanna #2 out this week? I thought it was, but it doesn't seem to be up at http://www.comiclist.com/new.html Go to DiamondComics. They seem to be the most reliable source of shipping dates that I've seen thus far.Thanks..comiclist.com was starting to freak me out. It's one of the strangest looking sites on the web. There's always some random, but usually quite fierce, biblical quote at the top of each page (often the same page which alerts us that this is the week that fantagraphics will be releasing Cocksucking Whores Who Suck c**k #3 that week) and then there's the baby. The background is this ghastly grinning infant -somewhere between the Teletubbies' Sun and the abortion imagery of pro-life propaganda that's been melted into countless other instances of his own head to create an effect reminiscent of H.R. Gieger's 'scary babies' phase. http://www.comiclist.com/new.html is often innacurate as a comic list, but as a jumble of abstract WTF? concepts put together in a randomly disturbing way I really think it deserves some sort of Art prise. Maybe the Turner.
