Yeah, so I saw SMU's production of The Good Person of Setzuan, and it was a little weird. I loved it, honestly. (I thought the lead might have been a little weak when she wasn't playing her cousin.) But I was just wondering if you should always leave a Breckt show feeling hungover.
Or if we even have an opinion about Breckt.
Yeah. And our director says STOPPARD is hard to understand. Yikes.

Most people find Breckt shows very confusing and uncomfortable their first time. It's a TOTALLY different style then anything else.
The Breckt style is meant to make you feel uncomfortable. Breckt's whole concept is that he wants to alienate you from the "world" on stage. He does not want you to think that you are watching something real. Many times, you watch a play and you get so into it that your mind starts to believe its reality. Breckt doesn't want the audience to forget that you are sitting in a theatre watching a fake event. So in that style, they flash lights in the eyes of the audience, there are odd pauses, shocking images on stage, anything to make that audience so uncomfortable that they leave the world of the play long enough to remember they are watching something not real.
So yes, it is correct to leave a Becket show feeling "hungover." Everyone leaves feeling something different.

I know! It has everything that makes Beckett so great, plus SHAKESPEARE references! Rosenstern and Guildencrantz is the most PERFECT play for theatre nerds.

I <3 Brecht. A lot. Threepenny Opera makes me jolly.
My college did Threepenny Opera last year....it was pretty trippy. But, like, even for Threepenny. My director's a little weird.
