Guys get over girls more quickly then most give them credit for.
Don't get yourself tied up in knots over these promises. I'm going to go out on a limb here and speculate that these were probably promises along the line of not leaving him, right? Made under emotional durress? Because if it's anything like that you aren't bound to those promises.
If you feel that you shouldn't be with someone, then don't be. Maybe you need some time off from the both of them to clear your head and sort things out?
