"Oh, nothing whatever..." Owle replied to Jade in a singsong voice. "Shapeshifters don't exist."
She knew she really ought to feel bad about this, but somehow it was just too funny.
"Well...I'm not really sure what they are, or where they come from, but I do know what they become..." Owle answered. "And I think it'll be alright. ...I hope so, anyway. I really don't know very much about it..."
Shaking her head, she continued. "But...one day, I found myself with a little kid with silvery hair and bottomless blue eyes following me around...his eyes...they looked just like that...well, I've always assumed it was an angel. Especially when his wings grew in."

Straightening her glasses, Jade reached out to pinch Olwle's cheek in hopes of seeing if she were really there. "That... it's not possible..." She murmured, invading the young woman's personal space to pull gently on her wings, prod at the shoulder pads, and overall be an annoying little fly to Owle.

Elizabeth laughed at Jade's reaction, though the librarian made a loud "shush" noise, letting them all know her displeasure. Nevermind- the librarian was an old woman and she would have to live with this little fact.
"I like you. I'm Elizabeth, by the way." She offered her hand to Owle, hoping for a shake. "What does he look like now... your creature?"
It seemed rude to ask, but it had to be done. What would this creature turn into; a thing of beauty, or horror?

Owle didn't react to the cheek pinch at first...then she clapped a hand to her stinging face. She didn't feel any poking at the scales...those things could stop a bullet at 100 meters, she wasn't going to feel a poke through them. They were smooth and hard beneath Jade's touch, and they could have been made out of...something...If she tried to pry them off Owle, though, that would be a different story.
Owle had a bit more extreme reaction when the woman pulled at her wings though, yelping and flailing her arms about. "Careful!" she exclaimed. "Those are sensitive!"
....
And the librarian, who was positioned just so she couldn't see the wings, again turned to glare at Owle. "Shh!" She put a finger to her lips and hissed.
"S-sorry..." Owle muttered, placing one hand on the wing Jade was pulling at to steady it, and hopefully make it less painful if the woman kept tugging. The feathers were soft and warm beneath Jade's touch, the tiny wings perfectly articulated, with what felt like the proper bone structure underneath...
And, sweeping Owle's hair away from her shoulderblades would reveal they blended perfectly into Owle's back.
Turning from her efforts at fending off Jade, Owle's eyes met Elizabeth's once more.
"I'm Owle..." With her free hand, she grasped the other woman's, giving it a firm shake. "Please to meet you, Elizabeth."
She smiled at the question. "My son," she corrected gently. "He looks like a little boy, with messy brown hair and bright green eyes...he's got a couple of wolf features to him, ears and a tail. Kind of like that plushie I gave him..." she mused to herself, as an aside. "And his wings look like they're made of fabric; you can see the stitches."

Giggling softly at Owle's behavior, Jade smiled at the pair. However, instead of being warm, it looked rather tired and worn out. "I know you haven't asked, but you both can call me Jade." She said before bending down to pick up her thesis papers that had fallen before. "I-I work as a journalist..."

"Here...let me help you with those..." Owle said gently, bending down to help her gather the dropped papers. She was finally feeling kind of guilty. "Sorry I made you drop them...I shouldn't have done that..."

So she considered him her son. That was interesting. "Like a wolf stuffed animal?" That was another interesting fact to consider. "You gave him a plushie? Mine wanted an antler. Strange... It would be interesting to see if he ever sprouts antlers- if he's even there when I get back home. It's quite possible it won't be." Elizabeth found herself unconciously switching to the pronoun 'he', as if the creature had a definite gender.
Turning back to Jade, she resisted the urge to laugh again. The poor woman! "Hello Jade. I'm Elizabeth, as I may have already mentioned. I forgot." A short memory was unfortunately one of her traits. "I'm just a student- no job yet. I want to work with mythically creatures, eventually... it's a strange dream, I know."

Owle laughed in embarrassment. "Well, it was the only thing I had with me at the time...it wasn't even really mine. But when it reached out its hands like that, I didn't know what to do..."
Rand hadn't had a definite gender until days after the sacrifice. She suspected he'd become a boy because Tiamika had called the wolf plushie a he.
"I don't know much about these things, but I don't think it will vanish on you..."
