I found this when researching California's age of consent laws.

Taken from: http://www.ageofconsent.com/california.htm

Quote:
WHY SO MUCH ATTENTION TO STATUTORY RAPE?

California has the highest teen birth rate in the U.S.

Every 8 minutes, a teenager in California has a baby.

3 of 4 births to High School girls are fathered by adults.

Men over 25 account for twice as many teen births as boys under 18 years old.

The Average Age difference between the teen victim and the adult defendant in cases filed by the District
Attorney is 7years 9months.

Men over 20 are responsible for 5 times as many births among junior high school girls.

In California almost 70% of teen births are fathered by adult men.

On an average California day 76 teenage girls, 17 & younger, will give birth.

In Stanislaus County over 6% of teenage girls will give birth in any given year.

In 1993 1,572 births in California were to mothers 14 years or younger.

The rate of sexually transmitted disease among teenage girls is twice that of teenage boys.

This all translates into a tremendous drain in our welfare and medical resources statewide.

AFDC and Medi-Cal costs for 1 teen pregnancy, birth and 1st year support is $10,000.

Total costs for teen births to those 17 and younger in 1993 for California were $140 million.

Oh wow I can definatly imagine why they would crack down on it. My hubby is older than me but not that much older. On top of that we went to the same school which I think makes it less wierd. I was 17 and he was 20 when we started dating. Having a teenage mother give birth every 8 minutes is horrible but it also makes me wonder how many would be giving birth if it wasnt for abortion. i would guess you could at least shave a minute off that 8 which is even scarier.

Maybe I'm missing part of the picture, but some of those statistics actually provide contradictory arguments, or at least non-agreement with in the data. It seems like different data was used to come up with each statement, and so to display them all together like that is rather misleading.

EX: "On an average California day 76 teenage girls, 17 & younger, will give birth."

This is equal to about once every 18 minutes. Which is different from "Every 8 minutes, a teenager in California has a baby. " This implies that the first statistic only looked at those under 17 and under, while the second is including (I'm assuming) 18 and 19 year olds as "teens" which is technically true. However they can also be classified as adults by law. As they are of legal age, it then seems misleading to have them included in quotes about "underage" sex and the problems of older men taking advantage of younger women, when they are of age to give consent.

Where are these statistics coming from? We all know that California is one of the bigger states, therefore the statistics, while high, would be reasonable. Look at the size of a state like Rhode Island. If you had the same concentration of teen births there for the amount of people in the state, it would be a much smaller number.

Additionally, our Hispanic population is HUGE, and many of the first generation immigrants are coming from a place where is is NORMAL for 13 year old girls to have babies. While we may find this weird, this is a cultural carry-over from other, non 1st world nations, that usually subsides after a few generations. If we watch the trends in later years, I will bet that teen pregnancy drops a LOT as soon as most of these people integrate into our society and leave their old ideas of children having babies/education only going to the 4th or so grade behind.
