appearently breaking boards are for show I think. I dont think the enemy would let you take your time to get into position or so and use w/e attack that break boards (unless you can do it quickly which I havent seen before) and ice is pretty hard to break. I made my hands bleed (I didnt knew) just to break an ice at school which I thought would be easy to break and didnt broke in half, I broke only a small part of it (now I think I can break it in too). Ice or boards, I say it would show strength but still for show. I not too sure but wasnt there some kind of technique that breaks boards easily even if your not strong enough but at least a decent amount of strength?

very true statement however don't you think that energy could also play a part in that, what about ki breaking where a master destroys the middle or bottom brick in a stack of 5 or 10 bricks?
and i agree that breaking in today's world is used mostly for show, but if you break wood or bricks everyday it could be part of your training. in my school we only do breaking every once in a while.
at these seminars the Master shows that there is technique in striking and it isn't just flailing your arms around hoping to hit something. and i love those seminars, however we are only allowed to break 2 things being wood or brick.

I broke a board recently! sweatdrop It nearly broke me too! biggrin I was out front and so worried about mucking up that I hit it with my back two knuckles, I broke it easily but afterwards my hand went all puffy! At least I won't do it next time......actually I probably will! LMAO!

The board is usually made of pine and you punch with the grain, making it weaker.

Honestly?
I don't really think breaking is a way to show off.
I broke through two boards with a front roundhouse kick when I was a white belt.
