what is your favorite strum pattern when playing the acoustic? I think mine is a fast down-down-up-up-down-up. as used in "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" by Green Day.

the pattern i mentioned above; i can't use that and sing at the same time. it's too complicated for my novice guitar mind.

Open chords do sound the nicest.. I like a down up down down pattern.

I usually wind up using whatever strumming pattern that seems to fit. It usually depends on the type of song.

Past Receeds by John Frusciante. Two bars of 3/4 followed by two of 4/4. Genius.

It depends on the song that I'm playing. Sometimes I'll play that bass string-down thing you were talking about, or I'll just strum.

Depends on the song. If I'm playing acoustically and singing along I'll just strum normally, nothing fancy, but if I'm comping I'll usually slip into the style, i.e. when I'm comping with the jhazz band on a latin piece, I'll give it a little "boom-chicka" rythm, down for the boom, then up-down quickly for the chicka.
