I agree on what you say. But I jsut thought of something. Sometimes the dubbers must fill in a phrase that has maybe a different meaning or nothing to do with the subject because of mouth movement. I noticed that by watching Family Guy in spanish and english. In the spanish version, the dubbers filled in a punchline with something totally different than the english version. That would be because if they would of done a literal translation, the phrase would of definately not matched with the mouth movements of the character probably because its to long or short.

Of course, sentences get changed for that. But they still are technicallly saying the same thing, but in an other way. In FUNi's case they changed it to APPEAL to American audiences. They even have a guy who writes jokes for the english version.

The funi dubbed version is only 40% correct. And that isn't because of mouth movements.

I C what you mean...But don't you think that just might affect a little?

I feel bad because your rant went unanswered besides stupid little sentences! So I shall put a rant of my own:

My three main problems with Funimation are that A) they get the script, translate it ALMOST PERFECTLY (they do their own subbing, and I speak a little Japanese so I know most of it is pretty correct) and then they just rewrite it. Kind of like taking a famous novel and then translating it into a different language... and rewriting it completely and HORRIBLY. Well, not completely, as you've said they're 40% accurate. And I'm pretty sure that 40% comes from all the grunting and screaming and power-up noises and character names xd ! I wonder if they take that into account when they're counting their 40% accuracy! I absolutely love that they want to "appeal to the American fans" but they have like, no American fans anymore because American kids want real anime. Real anime is getting popular, and kids want to say they are watching something close to the original. Of course, us die-hard fans wouldn't complain either! I'm not even going to begin ranting about the "uncut" version they're now airing gonk

My second main problem with Funimation is that the voices they pick...are hardly ever like the originals. In DBZ, the only one that sounds right to me is Trunks' voice actor (Eric Vale) because he sounds a lot like Trunks' Japanese VA (Kusao Takashi). I mean, in the American dub, they hired Chris Sabat as Piccolo AND Vegeta. While his voice is nice or whatever, I don't think it fits either of them. For starters, Vegeta's voice is deeper than Piccolo's. I guess they wanted Piccolo to be more "H4R|)C0R3!!@!1"? He doesn't really fit Vegeta either because his voice is too hard and scratchy. One of my favorite things about Veggie-head is that his voice is really deep and smooth, not scratchy and grunty like he's constipated 24/7! And I may have been the only one that noticed this, but in the "History of Trunks" movie they just used Goku's voice actor for older Gohan, but in the series gave him his own voice actor when he grew up. Inconsistency, much? Also, for some reason, Funimation has this thing about giving little girls 40 year old voices. Like Pan, for instance. I stopped watching the dub of DBGT and went out and bought the DVD's when I heard that one fatal line.. "I SHAVED MY MOOSE-TACHE, YOU IDIOTS". What in God's name is a moose-tache? Chris Sabat has a mustache and I hope to God he doesn't call it a moosetache. I may have to kill him.

Now that American fans are wanting more of the real Japanese versions of anime, Funimation has moved onto their new ideals - Keep the translation good, but screw up the voices even more! Take Fullmetal Alchemist, for instance. I've seen the entire series subbed, and Funi's dub of it is pretty good...except for the horrible, terrible voices. Ed sounds like he's 40, Al sounds like a little hick-boy, and Roy's voice is 2 octaves higher than it should be! And those are just the main characters! I mean, Laura Bailey as Lust? I'm sorry, but that girl only has two voices. Her crappy chibi voice and her "I hate life so I'm going to be monotonous" voice. So you see Lust, sitting there, talking like she's made of wood. Does Funimation try to ruin anime on purpose, or are they just really really good at it?

My final main problem with Funimation is that they try to make everything kid-friendly...and some things aren't meant to be made kid-friendly! I mean, Dragonball was never extremely profane, but yes, Vegeta does have the tendency to say mildly profane words...frequently. So somehow they took bloody fighting + mild profanity and made it into saturday morning 6 year old cartoon material. It doesn't work like that! If it's for older kids, making everyone spit instead of bleed and say "oh noes!!@!@" instead of "damnit!" isn't going to work. Adding crappy rock music doesn't help much, either. I don't understand why they took out the normal music! It sounds just as good now as it did then. Nobody even likes crappy rock music anymore! Funimation probably decided to make DBZ for children because they thought they could get more of a fanbase that way. I don't know if it worked, but they sure earned lots of anti-Funimation fans.

The only American voice actors I can mildly tolerate are Wendee Lee and Eric Vale, because according to reports (my friend met Eric Vale at a convention and I asked her to ask him this question) they (normally) only take jobs they think would suit their voices. And if you look at their works, their voices fit pretty well for the characters they provide the voices for.

But in America, everything is about how much money you can make. Not how correct and fair and smart, just how much money.

I think this rant has gone on long enough, I'll sum this up before I remember something else I dislike! I hope someone reads this and doesn't think I'm just an idiot sweatdrop
