Here's something to think on...

I started college not too long ago, and one of the guys in my class considers himself "goth". Naturally, he has the "dress all in black" thing going, and whatever, although I don't know enough about the "goth subculture" to really say whether he's goth or just dresses goth... But anyway, I'm getting away from my point.

This guy, Iet's call him K, is athiest. At one point we were talking about random stuff, and I mentioned that I was Christian, but that I was interested in the gothic fashion. He mentioned, then, that according to most goths out there, any Christian who considers themselves goths are just posers.

I thought that this was rediculous, of course, and I made sure to say so. How can liking a fashion make one a poser?

Since this guild IS dedicated to Christians who are interested in non-mainstream fashions and other things, I thought I'd ask your thoughts on this, just because his words completely baffled me.

Well, I'd say do what you want. . . It's not being a poser if that's really how you like to dress, etc. then what he says doesn't matter. Being a Christian has nothing to do with with how you dress and just because you ARE a Christian doesn't mean you can't wear black clothes if you like to. Hope that helps. . . God bless ya anyhow.

Oh, I know. Don't worry about me, I haven't cared what people think of me since middle school.

I was more posting this to see what other people's thoughts were on this.

Sounds to me like he's a poser. I mean, he's the one following the common trend of atheistic goths. He probably also talks about how he hates Christians too. Am I right? I'm being a bit stereotypical here, but in my experiences, the people who consider themselves atheists and goths are the people who are mad at their parents, and they dress and act that way to make their parents mad. But not all people who dress that way do it for that reason. For example...most of the people in this guild...lol.

I personally think it's kind of shallow to call someone a poser without even knowing exactly why one likes a specific fashion. From my understanding, goth is just a style, not a type of person. Sounds more like he thinks a goth should be the stereotypical moody-broody 'life stinks and everything's pointless' kind of person. rolleyes Maybe he should look into what goth really is before declaring himself one.

I'm almost certain someone posted the definition of goth in this guild before. I'm not sure, but I'm going to look through and see if I can find it.

I think people say that because they have a misconception of what Christians really are

It's his opinion, to me it's a stupid opinion but if you go around caring about what people think about the way you dress you won't get anywhere it's a waste of time and effort so i say get over it.

I know one of the nicest Christian guys in the area... he wears black all the time. He never changes what he believes in to make him popular. Somehow he fits right in with those guys. I've seen him even flip open the Bible and read from it before their eyes.

It's amazing. sweatdrop

Psh. If we have to start calling people posers, I'd call him the poser. Many goths don't think that being goth has anything to do with religion. He obviously doesn't have to big a spec on the opinions of "most goths out there". Goth is a system of fashion, music, and world view that has nothing to do with Satanism or atheism. In fact, many Goths are far from atheist.
