There seems to be some controversy over mothly themes. However, this is a good thing - it brought the need for some guidelines to my attention.
Here are some questions I want everyone to consider. Hopefully the answers will create guidelines.
1. Can the theme be either a play or a musical, or just a musical? 2. Can it be an Off-Broadway or an Off-Off-Broadway show? 3. Should there be any months where it's different? (i.e., June - vote between the nominees for Best Musical only, etc.) 4. Other comments?
Please, everyone, fill this out. I want to make this a clearer and easier process for everyone. Thanks!

1. Yes (since not every great show out there is a musical [Picnic, M. Butterfly, Flea in Her Ear, Noises Off, etc.]) 2. Yes (Off and Off-Off have a lot of terriffic shows [Bat Boy, Fantasticks, Lucky Stiff, Violet, etc.]) 3. Yes (In June I think it should be a vote between the winner of Best Musical, Best Play, Best Revival of a Musical, and Best Revival of a Play. That way we can still have a vote) 4. It dosen't need to have a banner or anything, but each month we should have an Actor of the Month or a Song of the Month (or other categories) and just note them under the banner for Show Theme of the Month.

1. I think that since a big fight over themes has been "Musical or play?" that the poll for theme be half plays and half musicals each month from now on. Like, if we have 6 theme choices... 3 be musicals, 3 be plays, and 1 final option for OTHER. And I would say no more than 4 each a month too. Any more and the voting could wind up being spread to thin.
2. I think that Off-Broadway is acceptable, BUT not off-OFF Broadway. That's just taking things a little to far. It should be a show that is at least SOMEWHAT known. I mean, how many of you people have heard of the off-off Broadway play "Rash Acts?" Or "Christmas in New York?" Or "Cabin Fever?" I highly doubt people would know that I'm talking about... cus those are off-off Broadway shows, one done at my school and the other two by my friend Kevin how did workshops at a community theatre.
3. I think if there is something HUGE going on that month, then yes. Like... Tony's month, a show that has something to do with the Tonys. October, a show with a "horror" theme to it. December, something to do with Christmas. And so on. There are not to many months that would qualify for special treatment. The only other two besides the ones I mentioned above that I can think of would be... something to do with love for Feb. and something patriotic for July.
4. The only other comment I can think of is that there should be some kind of guidlines for NOMINATIONS as well as the theme. Like a person can only nominate a certain number of shows (most likely the same number of shows that will make it to the theme vote) AND they have to be CLEAR on nominations! (I.E. People can't be like, "Ooo! I love such-and-such! How bout the theme be one of their shows?!" More like, "I nominate musical A, musical B, and Play C.")

DispatchNA 1. Can the theme be either a play or a musical, or just a musical? Obviously, my vote is for a show or a musical. Naturally, there are productions that don't apply to play. Sorry, but it's true. Magicians like Penn and Teller, percussionists like Stomp, weird things like Blue Man Group, and other shows. Monologuists like Spalding Gray or one man shows like Ian McKellen: Acting Shakespeare. 2. Can it be an Off-Broadway or an Off-Off-Broadway show? while there have been a few Off-Off Broadway plays that I've liked a lot more than some Broadway plays, I've even been associated with one of them, I must suggest staying within Broadway and Off Broadway productions. 3. Should there be any months where it's different? (i.e., June - vote between the nominees for Best Musical only, etc.) Um, I have a problem with theme months, but if that's the best way to include other themes possibilities like actors, playwrights, or other categories, why not? 4. Other comments? Categories other than plays or shows should also be considered. this way other shows than just that one specific one can be thought about. and why not honor a person other than just a show?

I just want to answer a question of Sernin's before I give my opinions: Quote: why not honor a person other than just a show? With a show, we're honoring a much wider range of people and talents than with just honoring one person. So, instead of nominating Sondheim, you could nominate your favorite Sondheim show. 1. Can the theme be either a play or a musical, or just a musical? I think either should be acceptable. 2. Can it be an Off-Broadway or an Off-Off-Broadway show? I think both should be accepted. If we know and love an Off-Off Broadway show enough, then it would be a fine choice for a theme. And if we don't know and love it enough, then it won't be chosen. 3. Should there be any months where it's different? (i.e., June - vote between the nominees for Best Musical only, etc.) I like the idea of June being Tony month, but I think it should stop there. If we want a lovey-dovey show for Feb., we'll nominate and vote a lovey-dovey show, but I don't think we should limit it to that.

1. I think either would be fine. 2. Like WickedElphie, I think Off-Broadway is fine, but Off-Off-Broadway is a bit much. 3. I am not a fan of theme months, apart from maybe June being different. 4. I like the idea of "Best Actor" or "Song" months to spice it up every once in a while.

Kitsune Ookami 4. It dosen't need to have a banner or anything, but each month we should have an Actor of the Month or a Song of the Month (or other categories) and just note them under the banner for Show Theme of the Month. The only problem with that is that Dispatch is the only person that can edit text on the guild home page. We have worked it out so that the banner can be changed without her having to jump online at the start of the month to change the it. This gives her the liberty of not having to be at the guild all the time. Having an "actor of the month" or something likes that would have to be up to Dispatch to edit, so I think that should be left to HER to decide since she will be the only one able to do manage it monthly.

1. I think both plays and musicals should be allowed.
2. I don't really think it matters if it's Broadway, Off-Broadway, or Off-Off-Broadway. A show is a show, and if no one has heard of it, no one will vote for it. Simple as that.
3. As far as theme months are concerned, I don't really have much of an opinion. I do think Tony month is a really good idea tho.
4. I agree with WickedElphie. We should limit the number of shows a month a person can nominate. Otherwise the list of nominations could get too long.

That sounds fair. 3. Should there be any months where it's different? (i.e., June - vote between the nominees for Best Musical only, etc.) I don't think so. 4. Other comments? Could we do something related to the theme each month so it actually has some significance? Or are we doing that already and I just haven't seen it?
