I've heard from a few sources that nearly every male in Thailand has been a pro kickboxer at one point in their life time. I know that there are dominant sports of every country....but to have a sport that nearly EVERY male participates in on a pro level, is pretty amazing in my book. Is there any other country where a martial arts style pretty much dominates their society?

I think it's an over exageration that all Thai men have practiced the art to pro level. But I do know that a large percentage have done it some point.
I would of hated to go to the filipines (sp) in the early ninties. You would of come back looking like a human dart board.

Yeah, I won't sugar-coat it because I'm filipino: The Phillipines is a shitty place to live. I'm proud of being filipino and all, but at the state it's in right now, I wouldn't live there again....Unless of course you want to live in cebu and party it up or in the mountains where all the rich folk are. Those places are good, albeit there are knifings and kidnappings.... I do, however, want to go to the phillipines to train in kali from one of the "grandfathers". They're basically people who have direct lineage to the origins of various kali styles, but they don't talk to most people or go in public. Also, they're very selective of who they teach (kinda sounds like those old kung fu movies; I know). They're dying out, though; and before they do, I want to go train with at least one of them. I've heard so many stories about them. I was once told that there was this really small eighty year-old guy (kinda reminds me of yoda, how I was told about it) who looks so frail and weak and he uses a walking cain. He walks so slowly and talks slowly, but when you put a knife in his hand, he's lightning fast and almost superhuman. From what I hear, though; that guy died of old age a long while ago.

Hence why Thai's are so prideful about there art. Almost all Thai men have copmpeted on a Pro level. In Thailand, you aren't considered a man, unless you have. But that doesn't necessarily mean that they are all GOOD Thai fighters... yes, weak ones do exist.

Hell, most UFC cats combine it with their grapple game, as we know..that's a statement on the effective nature of it right there.

I just wanted to make sure that new people to the guild don't assume that Muay Thai is invincible.
