The Night of the Pink Dolphin

"Maria!" The shout echoed off the walls of the long hallway as Inez poked her head out of her chambers to summon her sister. She needed some advice. The biggest party of the season was happening only hours from then, and she needed some assistance with her outfit. Frilly frock, or something tight and sexy? All were colorful, but she wasn't sure what was most appropriate for the evening.

The sheer, light draperies hanging in the windows blew into the room on a humid summer breeze, and Inez wiped a few drops of perspiration off of her forehead, frowning at her reflection in the mirror. The summer was always so hot! It was hard to be constantly beautiful when you were trudging through unbearable Amazon heat. Though Inez and her family lived in a city on the outside of the jungle, they couldn't avoid the weather. Air conditioning was rare, so they just sweated it out in the worst months.

She sighed and stalked back to the door to see if Maria had heard her cry. She pulled the door open and jumped as she came face to face with the dark eyes of her sister, who had one hand up, balled into a fist, ready to knock on the door.

Name: Beto (from Roberto, meaning "bright fame") Vinicius Carvalho ("oak")

Race: Encantado (Fa'e)

Occupation: Sex-machine and overall tease.

Birthday:

Age: 16-17 (teenager)

Gender: Male

Height: 5'7"

Weight: 150

Build: Lanky but muscular, a swimmer's build

Hair: Black, kinky, textured. Worn in mini dreadlocks, like these.

Eye Color: Ocean blue

Skin Tone: medium to dark brown, but his hands and feet fade to the pink shade of his dolphin form.

General appearance: Sexy, alluring, seductive. Clean cut despite his hair, Beto enjoys the finer things in life. He wears cool, breathable clothing, mostly shorts and t-shirts, and always sandals of some sort, even in the winter. For his nights of festivities, he likes to dress up in his white linen suit with a brightly-colored shirt underneath. On suit occasions, he likes to wear a straw fedora to accompany the outfit. Overall, Beto generally looks stylish and put-together, appreciating how clothes can compliment his good looks. He knows that the first impression is important, so he always strives to be polite and charming upon first meeting anyone. He seems assertive and confident, never wavering from his own self-love.

Distinguishing features: He has a bald spot on the top of his head where a dolphin's blowhole resides. It is the only feature that remains from his transformation into a human. Typically, he will cover it with a hat, to avoid questions about why there is an odd hole in his head.

Alternate appearance (dolphin form):

Likes: Women, parties, alcohol, sex, having freedom, the Amazon river, fresh water, music

Dislikes: Hangovers, being denied something he wants, being too far from a source of water, being a dolphin--it's much more fun to be human of course!, boring people, people who don't care to be social

Personality:

Powers:
• Swim: Beto has amazing skills in the water, and he's able to swim better than most normal people. He can hold his breath for long periods of time, and can dive to great depths before his ears are bothered by the pressure. He's remarkably fast in the water, and could probably swim competitively.

• Shapechanging: Beto can transform from his dolphin form into human form at will. He prefers to change at night. Upon coming to Gaia, Beto decided to stay mostly in human form, though it's been hard for him to not change back when he feels like it. Lack of freshwater rivers seems to be a problem.

• Seduction: Beto seems to be able to attract the ladies and keep them coming. He can seduce one at a time, and will try everything in his power to get them to sleep with him. Most of the time, it works.

• Party Planning: Beto is able to set up a party and be an excellent host. People seem to enjoy his gatherings, and he knows how to work the crowd, making sure that they are happy and well cared-for.

Concept: The Encantado of Brazil are pink river dolphins said to transform into handsome young men at nighttime. They are seductive men, said to seduce women and take them away with them, back to the river to impregnate them. It is said that in the morning, they let the women go free, but soon, these women realize they are pregnant with the child of an Encantado.

The Encantado

Information taken from Wikipedia

Encantado is a Brazilian word that roughly translates as "enchanted one." The term is used for creatures who come from a paradiasical underwater realm called the Encante. It may refer to spirit beings or shapeshifting snakes, but most often it designates dolphins with the ability to turn into humans. Although belief in them is starting to wane, there are still plenty of South Americans who believe in their existence ardently, and claim to have seen and interacted with them, or even that they are related to them. They share the most of the same themes and features as the fairies of european folklore.

Most commonly, the stories involve a type of freshwater dolphin which lives in the Amazon River called the Boto. It is larger and more primitive-looking than the other type of Amazonian dolphin, the Tucuxi.

There are three elements that best characterize encantados: superior musical ability, their seductiveness and love of sex (often resulting in illegitimate children), and their attraction to parties. Despite the fact that the Encante where they come from is supposed to be a utopia full of wealth and without pain or death, the encantados crave the pleasures and hardships of the human world.

Transformation into human form seem to be rare, usually occurring at night. The encantado will often be seen running from a festa, despite protests from the others for it to stay, and can be seen by pursuers as it hurries to the river and reverts back to dolphin form. When it is under human form, wears a hat to hide its proeminent forehead, that does not disappear with the shapeshift.

Besides the ability to shapeshift into human form, encantados frequently wield other magical abilities, such as the power to control storms, "enchant" or haunt humans into doing their will or becoming encantados themselves, and inflict illness, insanity, and even death. Shamans and holy men are often needed to intervene and ameliorate the situation, but sometimes the spell is so great that it can not be completely cured.

Kidnapping is also a common theme in such folklore. Encantados are said to be fond of abducting humans they fall in love with, children born of their illicit love affairs, or just anyone near the river who can keep them company, and taking them back to the Encante. The fear of this is so great for many Brazilians that many people, children and adults alike, are terrified of going near the water, especially alone. Some who have encountered encantados out in canoes have been said to have gone insane, although the creatures seem to have done little more than follow their boats and nudge them from time to time.
