Okay. Here's the problem. I'm 18(not the problem). I'm planning on going into the military (Air Force). But I also want to go on a mission. Now, I've been thinking on this subject nonstop for about a year now. I'm getting the personal feeling that it's not what I'm meant to do. But all my friends and family want me to go on one. Now I'm wanting to go but only because I don't want to disappointment them. But I don't want to go for the wrong reasons. I'm going to be talking to my bishop on Sunday to try and figure thing out. What do you guys think I should do?
Edit: sorry for the confusion. This is about me going on a mission.

What's not what you're meant to do, go on a mission or join the Air Force?
Have you FASTED AND PRAYED about it? Have you decided what you're going to do and THEN fasted and prayed?
If no, then I suggest doing so.
The prophet has counseled every worthy young man to go on a mission.
Yes, definitely talk to your bishop.
oh, two more questions to think about: Is the personal feeling you're getting about not doing the feeling you WANT?? and if you have fasted and prayed, have you gotten the opposite answer?
If you end up needing to go on a mission, you can always join the airforce afterwards.

If you're worried about being allowed to go to the Academy (be it Annapolis, West Point or the Airforce one in Colorado) you can go to school for a year or two then leave for a mission and return to finish off the last years with no penalties. I know for certain that the Naval Academy does that. I'm not sure the other two do but I don't see why not.

My dad's in the reserves and he said they(the reserves) would give me two years leave for a mission. But I talked to the recruiter and he says the Air Force(not reserves) wouldn't. I'm still trying to figure that out.

Both options have the likely hood of fighting in a war. With the army, it's possible to be sent to the middle east. But, if you go on a mission you will be fighting a war against Satan. Which is the more dangerous enemy?

I'm not holding back. I just decided I wasn't sure that what I had to say was right, would be helpful or was what God wanted me to say. I don't even remember what it was now, so it can't have been that important anyway.

[classic anwser] - Search Ponder and Pray. Read through the scriptures and pray fast and ponder and see if heavenly father gives you an anwser on what you should do. honestly I don't know about the air force or anything but can't you go on your mission and then go to the air force? I'm pretty sure they will respect your religious beliefs. But then again it all comes down to how strong your testimony is. do you live on your own testimony or someone elses? you need to decide for yourself on what you think is the right thing to do. and once again pray and ask Heavenly Father for direction if you are unsure.
