"Well, it's a version of an old story..." Clethia explained, taking the horse's bridle in one hand and beginning to walk along. The chickens quickly fluttered back onto the horse.
"See, one of them plays a lady, and the other two are knights, and one of them's her true love and the other one's forcing her to marry him...and then the two duel for her."

Sarrin fell into step with her, and regaurded her in a conversational mannor "really? I'm honored to be in the midst of a whole acting troupe. I never was very good at pretending to be anyone I'm not..." He said, acting the part of a naive city dweller. "I guess I'm just not much of an artist..."
Sarrin walked with his normal practiced gait, and carefully kept his distance from Clet at around 3-4 feet at the least, so as not to appear imposing. he made sure that the smiles that he gave so frequently in his 'naive act' held nothing more than comradery, lest she think he was trying to take advantage of her. Hopefully I can add this girl to my contacts... it's always nice to have friends.

Clet listened carefully to the soft clucks and rustling noises her roosters were making before translating. "They say it takes lots of practice to be good, and they've only just started, really. I'm sure you could be an actor if you tried, but I've never tried before. I just let people know what's going on, since most people don't understand what Henry, William, and The Third say."
Clethia wouldn't have been able to tell a lecherous smile for what it was if her life depended on it; such things simply weren't in her skewed view of the world. She'd left home before the 'birds and the bees' talk had been given to her, and, thanks to some very protective roosters, had never had to learn the hard way. She'd never learned the easy way, either, since she'd never gotten close to anyone who wasn't a fowl of some sort.
As such, she returned all smiles that were sent her way, and added plenty more, too, in the bargain.

((in the interest of moving our plot along, why don't we move to laburnum in a couple posts?))
"really? I still doubt I could ever act like someone else... I'm just a traveller. nothing more." This last part was a blatent lie, but he was used to pretending to be various people, as the need arose.
"Although I can think of times it might have helped me in my travels... oh well. I'll just work with what I have." he gave her another smile.

((Sure. Sounds like a good idea.))
"You just have to try sometime," Clethia assured him. One of the roosters gave a rather loud squawk. "Henry says you can do anything, if you keep at it long enough."
Clet smiled ever wider at him. "What kind of places have you traveled to? All I've seen is Cameliard."

"Well, I traveled mostly in the northern part of the country. did you ever hear of a town by the name of marrik? I passed through it around a month ago. It's not that memorable, but I had an interesting run in with some magi... tell me, what is your oppinion of magi?" he tried to make his inquiry sound offhand, but was unsure as to his sucess.

Clet got a bewildered look on her face when he mentioned the name of the town, and shook her head slowly when he asked if she had heard of it.
"Magi? Those are the people that make things appear out of nothing, right? We once shared an alleyway with someone who said he was the great fire mage Roland, and he made pretty things out of flame for people....you'd reach out to touch them, and then they'd disappear in a puff of smoke. Poof!" Clethia spread her arms wide, to illustrate this point. "Like that."
It didn't even occur to her that she hadn't answered his question.

Sarrin was disconcerted. Either she has somthing to hide... or she's a simpleton. I'd better not let her know too much...
"well, yes. that would be what magi are. I had a run in with some particularly mean ones. I managed to stop them from harming me, but I had to get out of the villaige quickly. I don't think I'd ever like to go back there." There was simply too much truth in this last statement for him not to say in emphatically, but the rest was (of course) a fabrication.

((Simpleton. 3nodding ))
"They were mean to you?" A look of concern spread over Clethia's face.
One of the roosters, Henry, clucked. Clet gave him an odd look. "Isn't that a little much? Even if they did try to hurt him?"
Henry ruffled his feathers and settled down. Clet turned back to Sarrin and smiled gently. "Well, I'm glad you made it out okay. I hope someone stops them from being so mean."

"oh, I don't mean to brag, but I managed to... erm, 'prevent' further acts of meaness on their part..." He smiled slightly, slowly getting into his new charactor. he was already getting his story ready, switching a couple allegences around... so mabey it wasn't anywhere near Marrik... so mabey they were white mages... mabey they were trying to help me in their foolish way... meh, so these dark- no- fire mages! that's it! Fire magi have short tempers anyway. - these fire magi accosted me and tried to convert me to their ways by force... excellent...Sarrin had prudence enough to hold back on his story of bravado and daring for a few moments while she got a sense of suspence, and then plunged into his tale, which was actually a patchwork of various true events, slightly embelleshed, and artfully strung together. narative I was travelling alone through the area of Marrik, when a band of fire magi stopped me on the road. Their leader stepped forward and said 'we have seen your exploits in Theris' which was the city I had just come from. I think it is anyway, I'm not too good with names... anyway, he said 'we have seen your exploits in Theris, and it sa'*ahem* 'and it angers us to see someone as talented as yourself who does not worship the true god!' (he was referring to fire) 'I demand that you reconsider your petty alegiances and turn immediately to the worship of fire!'. and then he drew his sword! Obviously, they wanted my cooperation, so I tried to be as civil as I could given the circumstances. I set my pack on the ground so that I could stand easier, and I adressed him calmly and courtiously. 'sir' I said, 'If you would be kind enough as to sheath your weapon, I would be happy to engage in a theological debate with you, so that I could fully understand the reasons to do what you ask, and you could better understand my state of mind regaurding the matter. I hardly think it right that theoligans fight over belief systems while instead of one being correct and another incorrect, they might all be equally plausible and usefull given the varying states of the human psyche.' his only reply was 'wrong answer, fool!' and then the group fell upon me! now, I certainly couldn't have won given the odds, and as the fight went on, it was all I could do to keep my injuies to a minimum. but as I was parrying blow after blow with my sword, and ducking out of the way of some particularly nasty spells, I noticed that a 3 of the 5 looked like apprentices. so I chose one, and attacked him. I managed to wound him, and while he was distracted, I used a particularly flashy spell to finsih him off. the other apprentices saw this, and assumed I was more powerful than I am, and fled the battle. From there, I concentrated all of my attacks on the leader, bringing all of my remaining spells to bear, and finally killing him. There was no way I could defeat the last one however, so I was quite lucky that he didn't know that. He turned and ran, and I continued on to Marrik to get my wounds treated.
