The former UPN channel here began to run the 'new and improved' reruns of the original Star Trek series.
I guess that it was cheaper for Paramount to clean up the best copies of the master tapes of the original series, add some improved 3D models and FX to bring the original effects up to date, and clean up the audio than it would be to keep Enterprise on the air for one more season.
After watching two of the restored and 'improved' episodes, I have to laugh. Can't quite put my finger on the source of the humor, but I have to wonder at the quality of television of the 1960's if that was considered progressive science fiction.
Oh well, 40 years and counting. Happy birthday, Star Trek.

Hell yeah!
I saw the new version of Balance of Terror last night. It was fun to see what all the hacks at Paramount did to that classic. The externals were very clean, with modern 3D models of the Enterprise and the Romulan warbird, along with new shots and effects.
I don't hear the purists screaming about this.

I saw one a couple of week's ago, and actually wasn't sure if they changed anything. Which either means the changes were needless, or that they blended them in really well.
And yes, it WAS progressive science fiction at that time. Historical context and all that.

I've been taping them as I work on the day they air here, I've seen Balance of Terror and I had no problem with it. I had never seen the original version of the episode, but I could tell that the Romulan weapon and the comet were probably very updated effects.
I couldn't help but giggle at the stage make-up they were all wearing and the extreme lighting on Kirk's eyes.

In a similar vein the BBC has done this sorta CG revamp with a couple of its Classic Doctor Who releases, big two examples in my library are the Ark in Space and the Dalek Invasion of the Earth.
