Hey my mom told me that too! Except that I'm Nepali. She said it was also based on a book. Most of it by knowledge comes from Hindu stories. I mean for example, the warriors of Kyoshi is kinda of similar about the Story of Krishna and how he saved a village from a snake (called nag in Nepali). I mean I definately know that Katara's hairstyle is similar to Tibetians and Zuko is a Brahman meaning his Hindu. And Aang is a buddhist. There's a lot of Asian culture. Avatar is a hindu word. It describes the many states of Vishnu. And stuff.
