anybody have an idea of what you would learn in a Russian level 1 course? i'm doing self-study by the way.so i wanted to know if anyone had any ideas on what would be the equivalent of a basic Russian course?

I think it would probably cover (and this is based on the only language I've taken a full level 1 course in) greetings, basic grammar (verb conjugation, cases you'll use frequently at first, etc), simple anatomy words (in case you end up in a hospital in Russia that has no English speakers whatsoever...), descriptions... Go peek in a "teach yourself" book at a bookstore. They almost always teach airport vocab first, since they're geared for people who need to learn before they head off... but that's still pretty handy. I've often found that vocab lists for levels seem random, I guess because it's hard to decide what's "most important to know". My Spanish 2 taught us airport vocab, and never having been in an airport at all, I didn't know half the words in english lol

Good luck in your quest for Russian learnage biggrin
I run the Russian [only] thread in the language lessons; I update whenever I learn something new, pretty much, so feel free to check it out smile

My boyfriend is Russian and he is so hard to get info out of! Drives me nuts.

I would think the most important thing to tackle at the beginning is the alphabet and how to correctly pronounce each letter. That way even if you don't know what words mean, you can at least SAY them (which is my problem...)

First get the alphabet in place, like people have been saying.
Once you know how to pronounce the letters you'll be able to start with simple words. Verb conjugation - pretty easy, start with the present tense since those represent the largest amount of conjugations. If you have a book intended for beginners, follow it as it likely already has set a pace possible to follow throughout.

Knowing the writing and pronounciation is definently something you want to learn right away... Then, verb conjugations and some simple vocab. Then you can move on to tackle larger vocabulary. Try and use what you learn every day. :3

I'm also working on Russian by myself...and I've found that the internet is a better source than a lot of books. Use the internet to learn the alphabet and basic things. If you do that with no problem than a book may be worth it. Unless of course you have money coming out of your ears, and can afford to spend money on random books.

Honestly, that's not the best to teach you Russian. At least not right now, it isn't. (Seriously, look at the discussion for it. XP)

Try looking at the links it offers, though - it's rather useful.

Also try http://www.gefix.net/sazov/ and http://learnrussian.elanguageschool.net/

Well I'm taking Russian first year this year and it's main focus is on conjugations of nouns, verbs, and adjectives with the nominative, accusative, and genitive cases.

First lesson was basic sentence structure and introductions.
