First of all, I THINK this goes in the Library subforum. If it's not, please tell me otherwise! ^^;

-----------

I have recently finished reading the book Wicca for Beginners by Thea Sabin and found it very enlightening 3nodding One particular chapter/lesson/section that I enjoyed reading about was about shields.

ALWAYS REMEMBER TO GROUND YOURSELF AFTER RAISING ENERGY FROM THE EARTH

Personal Shields

Each person has their personal shield, and each person's personal shield is varied. For example, if you're an out-going person, your personal shield may be very close to your skin, meaning you don't feel a need to protect yourself. If you're a skittish person or defensive person, your shield may be further away from your skin.

To find how thick or thin your personal shield is, ask another person (they could be a friend or family member) to rub their hands together to create energy. Tell them to start with their hands about 3 feet away from you and to slowly move their hands closer until they feel a tingling on their palms and/or fingers. That's your personal shield.

I tried to find the thickness of my personal shield by asking my sister to feel for it. She rubbed her hands and moved them towards my arm slowly and stopped where she thought my shield was (about 6 inches at the time). She described my shield as 'warm,' but couldn't find any other word to express herself.

Defensive Shields

Defensive shields are well...to defend yourself! Keep in mind, this is not used when fighting, this is just used to protect yourself (hence the name 'defensive shield').

Basically, you first draw up energy from the earth, and then you just envision the image that you associate with protecting, and have that image wrap around you in a bubble. If you are sitting, make sure that the bubble also extends underground. If you're pressed against a wall (what? It could happen xp ), make sure it extends into the wall as well.

This image can be anything:

~Water bubble
~Suit of armor
~A castle, with you in the very center of the stone walls
~Ring of fire
~Anything else you can think of!

Don't-Notice-Me Shield

Have you ever been in class, and you were going over the homework, and you didn't have the answer? Or maybe the teacher announced that he/she was going to randomly pick on someone to read aloud the answer to the question they had just written on the board, and you didn't want to get picked on?

Have you ever thought over and over in your head 'Don't see me, don't look at me, I'm invisible, you can't see me' when the situations above happened to you?

I certainly have, and this was before I even knew what Wicca even was.

Unconsciously, I had been using the Don't-Notice-Me Shield technique. This shield doesn't make you invisible or anything like that, so don't get your hopes up mad D

The shield just makes people overlook you. They know you're there, but their brain doesn't completely register it.

I've used this shielding technique many times in class. Yeah, I can be shy at times too pirate And let me tell ya, it works 90% of the time 3nodding

Aggressive Shield

For a lack of a better term, I used the word 'aggressive.' However, this does not mean you use this shield every single time you're near your worst enemy.

This shield is used when people randomly decide to fight you, or they want to hurt you badly, and you don't know why. This shield also protects you, same as the defensive shield, but it takes more concentration and energy.

When using this shield, you imagine another image that you associate with strong protecting. Again, you imagine a bubble or a circle of it around you. Concentrate with all your might. Expand the shield if you must. Pour energy into this shield and keep a steady flow going.

Thea Sabin recommends you try barbed wire for your image. I tried that, and it didn't work for me, but maybe it will for you.

After I practiced a few times, I asked my sister to sit about 3 feet away from me, just in case my shield was huge. I closed my eyes, drew energy from the core of the earth, and formed my shield. Without opening my eyes, I asked her to rub her hands together and to feel for my shield.

I kept my eyes closed so that I could concentrate on the shield I was projecting, and not the movement of my sister's hands.

Almost instantly, my sister told me she felt it. I opened my eyes slowly, still concentrating on the shield, and saw that her hands had stopped only a few inches away from where they had started.

I asked her to try to push harder, to see if she could break past my shield. She nodded and pushed, and her whole arm immediately started shaking uncontrollably. She told me that she felt the energy, and that it felt 'really, really hot' and that there was absolutely no way that she could push past it--almost as if there was a brick wall in front of her, not a shield.

I told her to try to push with her feet instead of her hands, and the same results happened.

These effects won't happen with the defensive shield, as that only defends you. The aggressive shield is when you're in a very big need for defense, and should only be used sparingly, as it requires an immense amount of energy.

Yes, I know the energy comes from the earth, but it drains from you as well. Always after practicing, I would feel tired and a need to just sit there or lie there a few moments before I could drag myself up.
