Branwan 25%
------------------

Branwan lay on her stomach on top of a colorful beach towel. She was in a purple tankini and board shorts, the emerald necklace Erik gave her dangling from her neck. At a glance her appeared to be reading a book, The Island of Dr Moreau by H. G. Wells, but if you looked closer you would notice that her eyes were closed and she was listening to the relaxing sound of the surf.

She was, in fact, half asleep, I better turn over soon, she thought though the haze of warmth, I don’t want to burn…

"Whoever thought that book would ever truly be based on reality," Christopher sighed a little as he approached.

Having a seat down on the sand next to Branwan, Chris gave her a warm smile.

"How you been?" Christopher hesitated to begin his discussion. "Listen Branwan... I'm sorry about the cafeteria incident but I think it's time you and I had a serious talk. I consider you a good friend and I know that things have been kind of rocky lately. I don't want to risk losing our friendship over it. So, here's what I want... I want to know why you feel the way you do. I think that will be the only way I'll understand your perspective at the moment and not step on your toes in the process."

Branwan slowly opened her eyes as Christopher sat down next to her but did not look at him as he spoke, her face expressionless.

She remained silent for a moment after Chris finished talking, “Why I feel the way I do?” She repeated, staring out into the sea, “Well, it’s like this, Moreau thinks of us as just animals, right?” she drew spirals in the sand with her claws as she talked, “by going out and chewing up a dear you enforced that idea!” Her eyes flashed with anger as she said this and she grabbed a hand full of sand, squeezing it tightly.

She sighed and closed her eyes, running her hand through her hair, “Look,” she said softly, “I don’t blame you for having instincts, you can’t help that, what I blame you for is acting on them.” Then, and only then, did she turn her head to face him.

Since the conversation was staying civilized, Christopher hung his head and made his tail go limp, looking embarassed. He seriously did not want Branwan to think any ill will of him. Looking her in the eyes, he explained, "Branwan... It's more complicated than that. Moreau... he wants to see us suffer, to struggle. He gets off on seeing us feel like we're losing ourselves due to these changes."

"But he can't get that satisfaction if I, for example, embrace what is happening. If I try to meld it into my personality then there's no struggle. I can still be myself, just with some new acquired skills. Plus, the more I experiment with the instincts and the new impulses, the more control I will have over them because I know what will come with it. I can temper the rush with the wisdom that way. But if I try to constantly fight it and let it build up, eventually it's going to blow like a geyser which would not be good. Besides, I haven't done any harm..."

He looked away for a moment and his ears drooped, acting ashamed. "...have I?"

“But you are loosing your self Due to the changes,” cried Branwan, “would the human Christopher kill some thing? With his mouth?” She rested her forehead in her palm as Christopher talked, her eyes shut.

“No, Chris,” she said when he was finished, “you haven’t done any harm yet. But what if next time you accidentally attack a person due to your instincts?” She let that question hover in the air for a moment, expressing her worry.

“Look, if everyone fallowed to their instincts the island would fall into chaos” she sat up, “I’d go around stealing other people jewelry and eating any piece of dead meat I saw lying around!” Like your wolf tail, she thought and looked at Chris, wondering if he had made that connection to.

"But I'm not losing myself," Christopher whimpered out. "I haven't lost any part of myself at all, just my human physique. No, I never would have killed something with my teeth as a human but that's because I wasn't becoming the animal I associate with myself at that time. I am now though..."

Sighing and closing his eyes, Chris continued, "Branwan, I seriously feel like I've lost nothing... except for my parents as I'll never get to see them again. But I truly feel like I'm gaining. I know we all aren't going to feel like that. I'm not like everyone else Branwan. And I realize that your said instincts would be rather scary to experience."

"But like I said, there's less chance of having to worry about them overpowering you if you try to use them once in a while. If you try to grapple them and learn to master it, then you have the control, not that b*****d Moreau! He wants to see us struggle like this. It gives him satisfaction that we'll come crawling to him when we start having this internal struggle and give us pity."

"He wants that. I won't give him the satisfaction though. Besides, like I said before... the more you hold it in, the more chance you have of losing yourself because those instincts and animal behaviors are going to build up and eventually pop like a balloon. That's when you risk losing yourself Branwan. I doubt there'd be any chance of my hunting a human either. Wolves don't hunt humans silly. Besides, you'd be amazed how much self-control I can have."

Chris smirked a little, but it soon disappeared. "That's really all I can reason..."

“But going out and killing a Deer, something you wouldn’t have done before,” she said, holding up a finger, or rather too considering the circumstance, “shows how much you are loosing your self!”

“I wouldn’t go crawling to Moreau,” she said, wrinkling her nose, “and I think you acting like the thing he is turning you into would satisfy him mush more!”

She got up and shook the sand out of her towel, causing her book to fall into the sand, “The only choice for me is to succumb to my instincts and steal and eat road kill or to not and try to live as normally as possible. I chose the latter.”

"That's what he wants you to think," Christopher told her. "But that's bulls**t. I know because he's been trying to do whatever he can to scare me. He did something to my recent injection to give me a terrible nightmare that he turned me into a full wolf with no speaking ability and shipped me off to a zoo away from you all. He's trying to influence me with it, make me terrified of something I've always wanted to experience."

Standing up to meet her gaze, Christopher continued, "And just because I hunted a deer does not mean I'm losing myself. S**t, I always wanted to hunt before, but not like a game hunter. I hate those types, only killing just to have a thropy. At least I make use of what I killed. Besides, I haven't done it since the first time as there's still plenty of meat left. However, if I were surpressing this constantly, I can guarantee I would have killed at least 5 or 7 different deer by now because it'd be constantly trying to escape, those instincts."

He was getting worked up now, but staying calm. However, Christopher was getting into a heated spiel. "If you want to surpress what's happening to you, not deal with it, then that is fine with me. But realize that it's not the answer for all of us. Just because I'm embracing something I've always wanted and have control of it does not make me a freak or a monster. I am not a monster. Moreau is a monster. I'm just being who I am and what becoming what I've wanted. I haven't changed drastically, have I? Besides, obviously I'm still very much in human logistics so don't tell me that I'm not myself anymore. I am... I am!"

Branwan’s face hardened as Christopher swore but she had bigger fish to fry, as it were, “Those dreams are normal,” she shuddered involuntarily, remembering her own, or rather, I don’t think He is conditioning you with them.”

Again her face hardened, but again she did not speak of it, “Yes,” she said hesitantly, “yes, you are different. Most people on this island do not want to change.” She thought about that, “Into an animal, that is. Like I said in the cafeteria, you have a reason for how you act.” She looked in to the distance for a moment as she thought, “But that doesn’t give you reason to get others to do the same.” She was thinking of Erik.

“Yes,” she agreed solemnly, folding her towel, “Moreau is a monster.”

Christopher fumed a little at that accusation. He hadn't tried to do such a thing. A growl underlining his voice, "Just what the hell are you getting at?! What was that suppose to mean?"

He folded his arms and tapped his foot on the sand, waiting for an answer.

“Erik was there with you I assume,” said Branwan calmly, pretending to ignore Chris’ growls, “you were the responsible adult there at the time, you were in charge.” She was not looking at him, “He has no special circumstances that make it okay for him to hunt with his mouth.”
PostPosted: Sun Sep 24, 2006 7:01 pm

"I didn't force it on him!" Christopher shot back at her. "Erik's been really active and playful in general since his changes. It's his choice. Besides, he's still himself too you know. Just a couple days ago, he showed me this book he had worked on involving dinosaurs and what the world would be like if they still existed. He's only been more open since this. He has no reason to hide himself now, especially around me."

Letting out a long sigh, Christopher held his hand to his forehead. "Branwan, we all have our ways of dealing with this, ok? Only you're not dealing with this. You're hiding. And I'm going to tell you right now that eventually you're going to have to face the facts, otherwise you'll be left in the dust. I don't know how much more pleasant I can be if you're only going to look down on me or think of me as less. But if you wish to, I'm not stopping you. But don't expect me to stick around in the long run if that's how it's going to be."

“Hiding from it am I?” she growled, “alright then, maybe I’ll stop ‘hiding’” She smiled, or rather, showed her teeth, her eyes glinting, “Just keep be careful with that wolf tail of yours, next time I see it I may just eat it.” With that she flipped her towel over her shoulder and started to walk up the beach, chin held high in anger.

His ears flattening against his head in anger and teeth beared, Christopher let out a very loud growl and chased after her. He quickly dashed past her and stood in her way. Chris pointed a clawwed finger in her face, a scowl on his own.

"Now you listen right here," he practically howled. "I tried to be pleasant with you! But you felt it better to push me around. Well guess what, here's the result!!! I hope you're f**king happy now..."

Christopher made sure to emphasize on the profanity as he knew just how much she hated it. "You go ahead and be as mean and hurtful as you want. I don't care anymore. You made it clear you don't give a flying s**t about our friendship so why should I bother holding onto it, right?"

A grim look filled his eyes, almost condemning in nature as he said the next bit. "...But know this much. You hurt my little brother and I'm going to come looking for you. He loves you with all his heart. If you reject him because he's trying to come to terms with what is happening to him, then your heart is as cold and black as Moreau's."

Chris's eyes narrowed at her for a moment before he turned around and walked away. He clenched his fists together and growled to himself. His mind was fuming like crazy. If she crossed him one more time today, the consequences could be dire.

Branwan felt herself bristle with anger but her face remained emotionless. The only outward sign of her rage was the fiery glint in her eyes.

As Chris swore Branwan’s face hardened and her eyes narrowed, she had to bite the inside of her cheek to avoid yelling right back at him.

Ha! She thought, why would I do any thing to hurt Erik? You’re such an idiot for thinking that, idiot. But she didn’t say it out loud.

As Christopher turned away Branwan did the same. In her eyes she had won the argument.
