i like them but apparently they don't like me or the tank I put them in....for some reason, either they have a narississtic complex or the water isn't well enough, they keep ramming into the sides and jumping. Though comets have always been easier for me.

You mean like.. Tosakin? Or just with the spread out tails?
I haven't had fancy goldfish with butterfly tails much.. I liked getting fancies that seemed to have closed, single tails, because they're better swimmers and won't be pushed around by the current my HOB filter makes ^^;;
Dunno why they would keep jumping out.. is the tank topless??
As far as I know about them.. their rules would generally be the same for fancies, except they would like less current since their tail makes them weak swimmers, so I would avoid filters that created a current too strong for them to resist, or if you do have one, make sure it won't push them into a sharp object or something..
Also, since they're mildly freaks of nature internally, lots of them have swimbladder problems.. dunno if that happens with comets, never had them.. so you would avoid feeding floating food so they don't ingest air while eating, and avoid food with lots of grains in it.

jumping out? i second that question is the tank un-covered ? also, how big is it? goldies need lotsa room because they produce a lot of waist. they may be jumping because of the watter quality. please get bact to us on this, id like to help.

I have a cover on my tank. You can tell they're still jumping though I come home and check the cover and you see the little wet spots on where they hit. =_=
So anyway I gave up on fancy goldies I'll take the every day comets. Save them from the stomachs of others....though even caring for the comets are becoming a challenge. There's always something wrong with them.

Yeah, its really hard to fined a healthy comet these days v.v they are kept in such cramped tanks and just left to fend for themselves besides the occasional feeding. They usually have ich, fin/body rot, and parasites @__@ and they need a huge tank. I really recommend having a quarantine period of at least 2 weeks to make sure they are healthy.
good luck with your comets! My boyfriend and i are going to be getting some fancy's later on after we clear out our 55 gal.
