You were just enjoying a pleasant walk down the beach when all of a sudden, five-hundred and sixty pounds of pissed-off (or perhaps hungry) sharkbeast comes charging at you out of nowhere! Its target? Your hapless child, running straight toward you and hardly ahead of the jaws of death.

How did this happen? Why is Bolide after your kid? Is it all a misunderstanding? Or are you going to walk away with the impression the Institute really is a housing monsters? More importantly, will you get home with all your limbs intact?

Another pleasant Sunday afternoon, ruined by news reports detailing the brutal murder of a young woman about your age and her Cambrian child. The strange thing? Pikaia's Children is doing everything possible to distance themselves from the slaying, and initial investigations show it might just have been the woman's own neighbors who initiated the violence. You turned off the TV, rattled by the news, just in time to hear a knock on the door.

You're wary of the visitor--he is a handsome, well-dressed older man who introduces himself as a Dr. Telyanin, and he has come into the information that you are the fortunate guardian of a Cambrian child. Further conversation reveals that he honestly seems quite concerned about your situation and that of your child, and that he, too, has one of the miraculous creatures. Might he come in and sit down to discuss things?

What do you do? What discussion do the two of you have? Does your child meet him, and how does she respond to his presence? The more sensitive children might pick up on something not quite right...

(Cee's note: Dr. Telyanin is not a member of PC, though he has been in the past and may or may not be working for them in the present. He would be very casual about informing anyone who asked of this connection--but all the while being very warm and reassuring and utterly fascinated with the Cambrians. His interest in the Children, he will explain, is a protective and proactive one--he loves humanity, and would not wish to see them run out or killed if any of the Cambrians should become hostile. He is almost too good to be true--and may well be, though if he has any darker motives, they are well-hidden.)

While the people in your local neighborhood have adapted well to the continuing presence of your child, the rest of the city's population is far more xenophobic. Unfortunately, work has tied you to the place and your child's weird dietary needs (and inability to let you out of his sight for even a minute) require that both of you go downtown to the local fish market every three days or so.

It usually doesn't get ugly, but today, the crowd's agitated. Someone in a neighboring city was injured or maybe even killed in an encounter with a "wild" Cambrian, and while your child is as skittish and shy as they come, people want a scapegoat. Two young toughs confront you as you leave the fish market, snatching your groceries from your hands, shoving you down in the process, and trying their best to separate you from your child. The crowd quickly forms into a circle of bystanders; none of them look like they'll interfere in the violent scene, and some are even cheering the bullies on.

How do you extract yourself from the situation, if you do? And if you don't, what becomes of you and your child? Is this relatively innocent, if brutish, mischief, or something worse?
