A lot of my friends have dreads, they were all done by backcombing.
Basicly, you take a section of hair, take a flea comb, and comb up, agaisnt the grain of your hair. Then you put the hair inbetween your palms and rub your hands together to twist the hair, and back comb it some more until satisfied.
It's pretty painful, you might want to down a few beers before you sit down and have someone do it for you.
Also, of course, you can't use shampoo or conditioner when you shower, they would come out.

You can use shampoo, but it has to be residue FREE shampoo. Residue builds up and ******** up the dreads. The myth that dreads are dirty is bullshit! xD if they get dirty, they fall out, unless you get them by them BEING dirty... In the caveman sense. Cause cavemen had dreads smile

It's best to pay for them and get them done professionally, so you can get them wet and they look more awesome, and wont stuff up. I'm going to get some when my hair grows about halfway down my back (a fair way to go sad ) but I'll get them eventually! And flick them on everyone!! *dreams* good luck with your dreads!

I found the best method is to do.. nothing.
At least not combing or brushing. I've not for the last half year and dreads are starting form even though I mostly rock the ponytail.
Easiest method. Just takes a little patience.
