This Celluloid Nightmare

Surprisingly soon after her first trip into that dark hole in the back of the hall closet, Kiki was down there once again. Shortly, she discovered tattered remains of a styrophome figure.

How strange.

Nothing, the blue doll that lay squished between her arm and her body seemed to say, "Too bad." Kilayla knew it was just her imagination. Continuing her search with Nothing as her source of courage, Kiki found many strange and awe-inspiring things, amongst them, a jar with a vein-y looking little blue fish-like thing in it. She had the sneaking suspision that there was something very wrong with that thing being in a jar. >>"

Eventually, Kilayla came back through the hole in the floor to what felt like a completely different world. The air wasn't as full of dread and anger, but Kiki still carried a bit of it with her.

Theif looked up at her from the kitchen when she came into the living room.

"Did you go for a nap or something? You were awfully quiet," he mumbled. Kiki gave him a look. He hadn't changed clothes for three days. She didn't answer him.

Namid was sitting on the couch watching television. Kiki came to sit with him. "What were you doing inside the closet?" he asked quietly, crossing one leg over the other.

"I wasn't doing anything," she replied.

~~~
Over the next few days, Kiki went in and out of the lower floors, with Nothing at her side. She discovered whoever'd had the place before had put up lots of these really disturbing-but-cool paintings that consisted of lots of dark colors, and obscure images.
Mostly, it creeped her out, but there was just something that seemed to keep calling her back down.
After a while, Kilayla all but stopped eating. Her sleeping habits went from erratic to almost unnoticeable. On more than one occasion, Theif awoke to Kilayla laying silently beside him, watching his face. He was beginning to worry.
One evening, before he was to leave to work, Theif looked over to Kilayla, who was sitting beneath the mosquito netting in the bedroom, staring out the window. "What ever happened to your little friend, Sauda? You know, I happen to have her phone number right here. Call her, so you have somebody to talk with while you're waiting for Namid to get back home, okay?"
Kiki only looked at him with dark circles under her eyes, and droopy looking pigtails on either side of her head. She smiled a breif smile, that felt vaguely false. "Okay," she said.
Theif came to her and kissed her forehead. He handed her the small slip of paper with the phone number on it, and headed for the door. He was definantly worried...
As soon as Theif left, Kiki flopped onto her back and turned on the television. Realizing that there was nothing on, she reached for the phone, which lay half-hidden underneath her doll, Nothing. He seemed to be looking at her. She frowned at him, and layed him face down in her blankets. Then she called Sauda's house.
She stared blankly at the wall as she listened to the phone ring.
There was a soft scritching sound as the tip of the pencil dug furiously into the set of math problems she had been given to complete for homework. Pale green eyes were shrouded with hints of irritation and boredom. This was stupid. She didn't even like math anyway. Sauda blew out her breath in a bitter sigh, causing her grass-green strands of hair to flutter. That was when the phone rang. Curiously, she swiveled in the kitchen chair, practically pouncing on the phone in hopes that it'd serve as a useful distraction from homework.
"Hello?"
Tsunake peered in the doorway, one brow lifted as she spotted the homework on the table, then her adopted daughter, swaying on her toes, with the phone in hand. Well, whatever. It was probably for her, but she could hope that Sauda would actually be making some friends that she could talk too. The girl looked politely curious, stealing a glance at her mother and offering a small wave. C'mooon, be someone interesting, someone that would let her weasel her way out of doing math...
For a second, Kiki didn't say anything. She'd never really had much reason to call anyone before. "Hello," she said, eventually. "I'm calling for Sauda. Is she there?"
Kilayla held her breath. Breifly, she wanted to hear the voice on the other end say no, but took it back quickly. Suddenly, she felt very, very alone, and wanted the company.
The little girl's eyes widened for a moment, her grip tightening convulsively on the phone. "...This is she." Sauda's voice was hesitant, wavering slightly with suppressed eagerness, but also very shy all of a sudden. Someone was calling for her? Wait a minute. "...Kiki?"
Tsunake resisted the urge to cackle with triumph, sidling out of the kitchen, yet listening carefully. Well, it wasn't technically eavesdropping. She was just trying to be a good mother, right? Make sure her kid was getting friends, so on and so forth...
"Yeah. It's Kiki," for some reason, the fact that Sauda recognized her over the phone made her feel a little better. "You sound nice over the phone. But, anyway, I was wondering if you wanted to come over my house? Nobody's here, and it's kinda' lonely..." Kilayla said all this very softly. Something made her think it wouldn't be good to speak too loud with Nothing laying facedown beside her.
Sauda smiled quietly at the compliment, rocking back on her heels. "Thank you. You do, too." And Kiki did sound very nice--quiet, but very nice. "Come over? I'd like that a lot...I haven't seen you in a while." The dark-skinned girl glanced over to the doorway, grinning at the hand that poked itself through and formed a thumbs up. "My mom says it's fine. D'ya want me to come over now, or...?" For whatever reason, Sauda couldn't help but feel worried. Kikayla sounded sad...
Kiki's eyes shifted upward lazily, then unfocused. She decided that she felt bad, and needed someone other than Nothing with her. After that, she completely forgot what she'd been talking about. "Please come over. There's something here." Kilayla thought it sounded like she was talking about a monster. "I don't live too far from Catzi's. I'll go sit outside to wait for you."
She turned over on her side, to stare at Nothing, and her hand found it's way to her hip. In vague disgust, she removed it. Her hips had begun to fill out, and she didn't like it. Stopping to think about it for a couple seconds, it didn't even make sense. She hadn't felt like eating for days.
Sauda bit her lower lip, inwardly wondering what this 'something' was. Maybe she shouldn't ask until she got there..."Oh, Catzi's?" That was in walking distance. She'd be there in five minutes or so, maybe even less. The dark-skinned girl tightened her grip on the phone, not quite sure why Kiki sounded so...out of it. Had something happened? "I'll be there soon. Bye." Hanging up the phone quietly, Sauda slipped on a pair of sneakers and padded towards the front door.
"You're gonna be gone for a few hours, right?" Tsunake all but stated lazily, slinking back into the kitchen now that the conversation had ended. "Fine. I'll feed you lunch when you get back." Sauda smiled quietly, waggling her fingers in a quiet goodbye before slipping out the door.
Stretching her now-longer legs out, Sauda easily moved through the dense forests that she had run through before she had been adopted, quietly scanning the area. Around Catzi's house, huh? Well, there certainly weren't too many houses around here...all she'd need to do would be look for Kiki, right?
Kiki clicked the phone off and rolled onto her stomach. She randomly thought of the time she'd seen a girl on television peirce her own ear. The girl had numbed it with ice, then used a nail and a chunk of apple to get the nail in. Kiki got up and contemplated this, while digging through Theif's clothes.
After a while, she'd found them: two articles of clothing she'd seen Theif in only once since she lived with him. A shirt with long, striped sleeves and a black trunk, and a pair of longish black jean-shorts that on Kilayla would look like slightly oversized pants. She put them on with no hurry, put on her old shoes, then skuttled outside impatiently.
She felt some vague excitement that someone was comming over to visit her for the first time. And it was Sauda! There was something she really liked about the other girl. What would Sauda think of her tiny little house? Would she hate it? Kiki suddenly filled with dread. Sauda would hate it. Maybe Sauda didn't even really like her.
Kiki covered her face and took a deep breath. That's silly, she told herself. She sook her head. Stop thinking. She'd never taken down the twin pigtails that Theif had put in her hair. It crossed her mind to pull the ribbons out, but she didn't.
