How about a scary story contest? A chance for the writers of the guild to strut their stuff, and create a spooky story to go with any other festivities in mind.

As for judging, I'd say break the submissions into lumps of ten or so, with voting done via polls, the the winners of the different sections face off once more? Or something like that.
