Mikagi-sama I have some questions about this. I would really like to go to Japan on an exchange student program but my Japanese isn't the best. I'm trying harder but I don't know if it'll be easy. If I can go I have some questions: For the family I'm staying with, I may not know many words, phrases, kanji, or whatever but if I want to apologize for my bad grammar or speaking could I say: "私の日本語は上手でわありません。" or would it be better to say, "私の日本語は下手です。"? Then since I'm in grade 10 BUT if I were in Japan I'd be in Semester 2 of Grade 9, would I be able to get help for learning and perfecting my Japanese? And I could still ask the English Teacher for help but would they stay a bit later to help out a bit? Actually, there are many many questions I have about if I went would I be put in the same high school as the person (or Junior High) that I was switching places with? And yeah... sweatdrop I have some many questions I don't make sense and I can't think of any too even though there are so many involving language, help, schooling, and the like. So could someone help with this part if they know anything? Please help because I'd like to go but I don't want to embarrass myself and be stuck in a country where I couldn't get help or speak much... I think I saw a post here that someone said you can follow the English Teacher around and get some help. And also, two more things, I can take some pictures of places and keep them. But I'd look like a foreigner or whatever or be really weird right? sweatdrop And for those who havae been there or live there, the book stores, they have books to teach all the recquired kanji with all possible readings for on, and kun yomi as well as books for learning Jinmeiyo? I don't know where to gind anything for learning Kinmeiyo but I want to learn them to be sure of everything. I'll study harder for now though until I can go. OH one more thing, If I'm staying for a few months, I could still apply for a part time job to make a bit of money? (How old do you have to be to get one?) Sorry if this is long and annoying and makes no sense, I'm just really curious. sweatdrop you cannot apply for a job books on kanji? we have some yes..... do you know if its in kansai or kantou (or chubu, or tohoku, or hokkaido, or shikoku or kyushu?) dial;ect differes and saying it is sure to please.

DISGUSTING! you are so mean! すみません、私の日本語の話し方は、上手じゃないです。 （And its では NOT でわ Why? I thought heta meant unskillful and jouzu meant skillfull but then I would have to say dewanai or dewaarimasen but they'd mean the same thing. How am I mean? I was apologizing for why I'm not so good with Japanese? Is that bad? I know the sumimasen part but I meant the phrase part, sumimasen goes without saying on this site because I knew I have to say that but the phrase could still mean the same thing. "My Japanese is unskillful." or "My Japanese is not skillful." It means the same thing. I think it wouldn't be mean because I want them to know that it isn't good so I would be making many mistakes. Plus I asked if I could say that because I don't know what else to say. Plus I thought ではありません is more politer than じゃありません. My book said that. So I appreciate your phrase and help but how am I mean and disgusting? Plus wouldn't it go without saying that someone in this guild with a low grammar skill in Japanese say and ask a question about this? it sounds li8ke you dont want to communicate with your "family" very cold mean and barriative, use rigid words and grammar. it is very rigid, sounds scripted, and cold. or just foreign, i thought your level was higher than that confused anyway, taht is a very cold sentence the was very polite, and that is just odd. i have only heard "ではありません" in..... i think a few times. it is not much used becuase in literary situation ではない is used, and most people trying to be polite say "じゃありません" じゃないです, is friendly but polite. also, ヘタ is a strong word. ok... I won't say ではありません instead I'll use じゃないです. But would they not expect my Japanese to sound like that? I am from N.A so they'd know I don't use it often and my schooling would be like that. I could try to make it sound more happier and stuff. Oh... so ヘタ is the equivalent to "hate" in English in terms of strength... Well sweatdrop I'll keep in mind to not use it.

Where it is? Um... I'm still trying to find out if I can go. I've not applied yet so I dunno... I'd like to go to Hokkaido though smile I want to see Goryokaku. And Kyushu would be cool because if I was in Fukuoka I could see the Canal shopping centre. But I dunno. If I get in I can say but oh well.

Not impress them but I was told people like it when you can speak their language. So I would try to talk but I would like them to know I'm not the best. Like what if I went to somewhere where English isn't known that well and I went now when my Japanese sucks. It would be hard but I would like them to know. But I'm not awake at the moment but I'll take your "Why would you want to impress them; lets sound like an idiot. That's what we want." As as the first part a question and then answered above. But if not that I wouldn't care if they're impressed, I'd just like them to like me and know I'm trying.

Karoka_Forcia I have a Japanese exchange student her name is Narimi Noda. Well, I met her in my gym class and I talked to her and stuff and she's really cool! And I found out that she like anime too, and we have an anime club at our school but she wasn't able to go... My problem that I wanted to ask was that... True I love the fact that she is from Japan, and I was hoping that I could learn more about it by talking to her... But some how I feel that I'm bothering her by asking her to questions... But what else that I feel that maybe she feels like the only reason I'm talking to her is that she's from the country that I admire the most... I just don't want her to feel that I am just cause of that fact alone... Even if she wasn't from Japan I still would want to talk to her and be friends with her cause she's a really nice person... And I don't know what to do. I don't want to annoy her, you know? And be to nice... And yet get to know her more as a friend. gonk I'm confused!! What should I do? Is there any advice someone could give me that I could use in a conversation that wouldn't make her feel alienated or anything like that.... eek sweatdrop xd

Don't be too shy about curiosity. My host sister loved telling me about her friends and clubs at school- and I remember her taking quite a few cultural articles to share with her host family in America. She brought alot of traditional toys and snacks to share with her siblings and some house decorations with the family- and had me teacher her how to explain it all in English... Overall it seems like they're very proud of their culture(Who wouldn't be?). It's an exchange. She comes to you to learn about America and you get to learn about Japan... The host family is always the most amazing part of the experience.

Ulterior_Motives Princess_Akimi  Wow see now that is something that i was planning on doing..and i if couldn't then i will probally go there when i am 20 or 21 for a summer. Its something that i think EVERYONE wants to do lol so as many people have said the competion is ferice...like my sisters stench XD but i dought i will be able to, mainly because i have no real language background and my parents will shoot me if i ask to go now razz so meh ill wait but untill then i sahll stick to my new book of "japanese in 10 min a day". These book are the best..well not the best there is but they are for my beginner who jsut wants to randomly replace words. ex insted of saying sister i often use oni-neigh-chan(sp) i used the french one to pass spanish xD lmao with a 78 muahaha for those who are dumb i had to pass french XD lmao so hai im still even a more beginner than you razz but meh maybe we will both get our deams...anyways i need to go do my 10 min again XDDoing an exchange in Japan had been my dream since elementry school- I realized it was possible in middle school and despite my parents judment that I wouldn't get in. I was 15 when I was accepted- and spent my 16th birthday over there... Most students where 16 or 17...Usualy Juniors and Seniors in highschool do thay program- it's an amazing program- and one I highly suggest. I also was 15 when I first went to Japan. I think it is the best age to go! I can't really recommend exchange programs (I went there completely on my own) but I guess they are the best option if you don't know anyone there. Good luck!

Be open and friendly, and don't ask questions if you aren't interested in the answer, just because she probably WILL ask many questions. At first, you can show how interested you are in the culture of Japan, but also other countries.. then make comments about anything you two are doing... I guess showing interested towards the other person instead of talking about yourself will give a good impression. But remember to always be yourself! I am a person who laughs alot and likes to talk, talk, talk about everything so I just did it. But fortunately I know when to shut up, and that's a plus. You can make plans, I don't know, like you can talk about some palces you REALLY want to go,... well, it's not much, but that's my advice. I guess you should talk about anime when you get to know her better though sweatdrop I don't know any japanese person who is keen on anime so, be careful.
