I've got a pedal I use almost all the time, I have a few settings where it's just very light tone mods to get a smooth clean sound. I have some heavier ones, and some really synthetic ones but I only use those in a few occasions when playing with a group. Mostly it's when I'm goofing off, unless I want to add a touch more growl.

I've never really cared for distortion on bass. I don't use it but more power to whoever does. If I want a distorted sound I tend to just start playing a lot harder distorting the notes from sheer vibration.

it really depends on what your playing but i like it clean for the most part but the distorted sound is awsome to

i think distortion is just a way of masking unoriginal or unskillful playing. Myself, i only use distortion when the song i'm playing was written with distortion on it. But for all the songs i write, my tone is clean.

i like to keep my bass sounding like a bass but a bass that beaths fire heavy bass little of any thing else high low and full distortion. i like to rip. but some times you gota bring it down a notch and just sound like bass.

a lotta people seem to think that distorting your bass is hiding a lack of talent. Look mates if you watch any one who plays metal then you should know that distorted bass is not for pussies. hears the thing though you gota learn to play clean befor you can be bad a** enough to play distorted. and no over drive you wossies keep the bass low and make the guitar high.
