I have a similar habit that I can't stop spending money on costumes. XD

Dunno if it's already been suggested but: Get a prepaid credit card to budget. Once the money is gone, it's gone. So you can't spend anymore, yes?

Hitomi Hayabusa Well if you need to save moneys Xo then I suggest getting a pickle jar and cutting a hole in the top. Making sure it is closed tight and just throw your cash in there you need to save Xo
I agree with that suggestion. I have a cute piggie bank (not shaped like a pig) that I put all of my change in which I'll save up until the jar is full and then turn it into cash.

I don't know if you get an allowance or have a job or anything, but I always put a certain amount of money aside each month specifically for Cosplay. When I've spent that money I know I can't spend any more.
It take discipline though. sweatdrop

How much do you generally set aside?

I also keep a note of everything I buy and how much it was (I'm super organised like that) which helps me to know where the cash has gone.

I'm very unorganized to what I buy and keeping records of it. I don't spend alot in anime merchandise, so I spend more on cosplays (more then I should). I think next year I'll attempt your method. I really need to limit my self. It's just really hard to do -.-

If you want to save money, I suggest finding what you can at Wal-Mart (Though it may not be much, it will help a bit on the cost) And if you have a Hobby Lobby near you, they have a 1/2 off sale every other week, and you can buy you're fabirc there ^^

You can get one of those creditcard giftcards, one of the re-fillable ones, and put whatever your cosplay budget is on that. I suggest leaving other cards in the car. xp That way, when you run out of budget you have the whole way to the car to think "no wait.. that was the last of my budget, i simply can't buy the rest of that stuff" before pulling out another card to pay for the last of it.

i just work and work and work then buy fabrics/other materials...then make it....work some more...and some more get shoes at goodwill....work....and then its con time....i dont usually spen TOO much at cons..but still quite a bit ^-^;;;
i have a penny jar and as soon as its full (its like a foot deep and a foot wide) i go and see how much is in there (thats generally the step before buying fabric since my next costume is a chii dress i have to save up to buy all the fabric...)

i was just lucky and found some really cheap local seamtress that made me costumes for around $70, but the sad thing about that is that they were (1 hr away....gas prices). then i found out that my aunt would make me stuff for free (i had to buy patterns & material), but she lived (1 1/2 away!). now i'm moving so i need to learn how to sow. sweatdrop
thrift stores are the best! i have found so many great costume parts for cheap that way. espically all the boots i have. whee i have even started finding wigs at goodwill. eek
ask friends and relative if they have the tools you need to make your cosplay stuff instead of buying it yourself.
paint stuff! i have painted many things the color i needed and it was SO MUCH cheaper than buying it that way. spray paint is like a little less than a dollar at walmart and comes in so many colors.
also check out flea markets for stuff.
ask friends if you can borrow and wear their costumes.
buy stuff locally and not online. i have found that local party stores carry stuff at WAY CHEAPER prices than stores online. *espically wigs*
try working an extra small job and set aside that money for the con or for your cosplay. i did this with a babysitting job i had wonce.
raid after halloween sales. and ask anyone you know if you can buy thier costume off them after halloween's over. i got a really nice blond wig from my sister this way.
use parts from one costume for other costumes. i do this all the time!
hope some of these helped you heart
