My little sister and I have this dress that she found. We wanna make it look more lolita, any suggestions as to what can be done to it?
((so far we're thinking of adding lace on the ruffly thingies))

There's the dress on me ^^ It falls to ever so slightly below my knees.

I think that regardless of what you do, it's going to look more Aristocrat than Loli. O_o
But despite what ever it may turn out looking like, I'd add some sleeves first.
And maybe remove the last one or two tiers.
The add lace to all the tiers. And some lace going up the bodice and around the neckline. Followed by some ribbon interlacing between the two rows of bodice lace.

Hmm... I'll have to check with my sister to see if she wants to take off layer/tiers thingies... Adding sleeves... we'd need to find a way to add them (neither of us are expert sewers) and we'd also need to find matching material then...

We're definately adding lace to the tiers... I think... Up the bodice we can try maybe, but it'll be difficult since it's what should've been added before the dress was sewn...

Instead of sewing sleeves on, since it does have such tiny straps, I would just layer it on top of a collared shirt. I agree about the lace on each tier, and the length.

Hm... I think I'll do a little painting to show lace ideas.

I have to explain the second one. You could do a lace-up back. At johann's right now (at least where I live) there is lace that has holes in it to put ribbon through. You could sew that right on the back. What would look better would be the pannel trick I drew on the right.

For this approach, the procedure is a little more complex, but still relatively easy to do, if you can do buttonholes or put in eyelets.

First you have to sew a rectangle of matching fabric (right sides together) and pull it inside out, then on the edge sew buttonholes (or put in eyelets if you can.).

The dark green is folded back and sewn onto the dress along the red dots (as you do that, you have the "fold" opened, like a book). Then "close (the book idea again)" it over to the right side and stich down on the pink lines.

I would also add a layer of fabric underneath each tier, to make it poof a little.

:3 Thanks, Catharsis. That was exactly what I was trying to get at.

Yeah...I wasn't sure how good your sewing skills were. So if you can't add sleeves, a nice shirt underneath will suffice. :3 I'm trying to remember where I saw some cute ones. D: I think Charlotte Russe has some still. But you can pro'lly find some good cheap ones at your local Good Will.
Try using a cute accent colour lace instead of just adding white atop white. Baby blue is always pretty, although I'd prefer sugary cotton candy pink. ^^;

Well, with as thin as the straps are, I wouldn't suggest sleeves. It would also make it look too low-cut. I would love the cotton candy pink X3

Now I have to go make myself a skirt out of that idea. D: darn too many projects I haven't even started!!!

maybe do what i did to a dress quite a while ago, and add ribon as the sleeves...quite thick ribbon. Or just take the sleeves off and wear a blouse underneath?

it definatly needs a petti tho (:

it looks more like an underdress to me, to help make a skirt or something poof out more.
try wearing another loli'like outfit over it?
or do what catharsis suggested, because that looks really cool =]

puffed sleeve button up under it and maybe remove the layer over the tummy and below your knees so its a bit shorter....lace and petticoats help everything also~
maybe some pink ribbons and bows?

You could wear a white lace shirt underneath... I don't know... It acctully looks more like an underdress than an actual dress to me...

I would say do what catharsis suggested, but also the straps look too thin. it makes the skirt look more like an underskirt than a dress. if you cut off the current straps and resewed thicker ones on, and wore a blouse underneath then it would look more lolita. also, remember to get a pettie to make the skirt poof. heart
