The forest was dark, and sleeping peacefully as a small group set up camp in a clearing on the outskirts of their town of Broch. After a long day of hunting, it was time for some food and a well deserved sleep. Dreams met the eyes of the group as soon as their heads hit the grass, as the fire burned down to embers in the night air.

::BLAM::

One of the group jumped up out of his deep sleep, scared out of his wits, as he searched his camp frantically. His eyes widened as they met the tree directly in front of him. One of his companions, Anagove, was tied to the tree. Her face was so mutilated that he could hardly recognize her, her short blonde hair tainted with the blood of her flesh. Patches of her skin had been cut off and discarded who knows where, and her body was contorted in such a way where it was obvious she had many broken bones. She had not survived the attack.

The man backed away from the tree, drawing out his pistol, and promptly fell over onto a log. He moved his hands to push it out of his way. It felt warm. There was sap oozing from it. This was not a tree-- this was his second companion, Zae, blood flowing from her blasted head.

This time he did not suppress his scream.

People from the town were now filing in, curious about the disturbance of the gunshot, their little candles illuminating the campsite. The last survivor had been sitting on the ground, his pistol still in hand, screaming and babbling nonsensical words. In a clearing, near the party's supplied, Anagove's flesh was found, placed on the grounds to form the words "Who is Next?"

The man was declared insane, and the townspeople solemnly took him to a place they hadn't used in over 50 years-- the Stone Circle. Pushing him through a crack in one of the stones, they knew they would not have to worry about him murdering any more of their citizens.

What they did not know, is he held the key to escape, and could use it if he truly wanted to...

but the real question in his mind was... why was HE spared from the murders?
