Avel groaned, lifting his head from the pillow seated atop his bed. Crimson eyes drifted to the clock, glowing green letter reflecting off those eyes as they would a cats, being the only source of light in the dark room. He’d overslept. Again. Hell, he probably wasn’t even supposed to be sleeping, being one of the best nurses on campus. Ah, well. The others could deal with a few sick people by themselves. And anyway, it was only the beginning of the school year. There weren’t going to be a lot of people just popping up in the hospital wing. A sigh escaped pale lips as the man rubbed at his eyes in irritation. Sure, he’d overslept, but it still seemed so early! Why couldn’t he just wake up whenever he felt like it instead of having that blasted alarm try to burst his eardrums every morning. He swatted at the off button on the cursed alarm clock, silencing the loud beeping that had been filling the room only moments ago.
Running a hand through his emerald hair, he winced. It was tangled, and his hand was stuck. Damn. It would have been smarter if he’d tied his hair back the night before. Then this wouldn’t have happened. Not as bad anyway. Hand still stuck in his hair, he walked over to the silhouette of a table in across from his bed in the dark room. Slender fingers drifted over the desk under they closed around the plastic handle of a brush. Or a comb. Whichever it was, it would still work well enough. It was also taking more time than he would have liked to get out of the house. Starting at the bottom, he brushed the tangled out of his hair. This took him a while, and by the time he was finished, he just dropped the brush [which it turned out to be] to the desk and his hands to his sides.
Yawning, he sifted through the clothing hanging in his closet until he came up with something he would be willing to wear. This was his last morning in his own house for the next year, and he wasn’t really looking forward to it. He stretched again before switching out of his pajamas and into the clothes he’d found. Just the same as what he usually wore. The shirt could have been called a straight jacket, being that it reached far past Avel’s pale hands, nearly touching his knees, and it was belted at the ends. Why on Earth he even thought to wear something like this would be beyond most people, but to each his own. The pants were black, tight, belted... He was basically in a version of gothic clothing if you thought about it. Beside the fact that with him wearing it, he looked somewhat insane.
Finishing with that, he searched the room for his belongings, having misplaced them the night prior. ‘Ah! Found ‘em.’ He stepped across the room yet again and picked up both a backpack, which he slipped onto one shoulder, and a small, black bag. Medical supplies, of course. So, maybe the school had their own, but he wasn’t going to take any chances. Nor was he going to use their’s, being the cleanliness freak he was. He wasn’t going to trust some school to clean and disinfect their medical tools and the like. No matter how new it was. He shook his head at the thought, but soon just shook off the entire feeling and headed for the door.
After opening it and letting in the light of day, which illuminated his deathly pale face, he turned toward the room he was leaving behind. Saluting, he grinned at the room, revealing rather sharp teeth. “Au revoir, my beautiful home!” he said in a falsely dramatic way. Time for him to leave, then. He closed the door behind himself and turned back around, looking down into the street that his house looked down on. So, it wasn’t much of a house. More of a one-room apartment. Briefly, he wondered why he would be renting an apartment the whole school year when he was going to be living at the school. Eh, it was better than not knowing where he would live when the year was up. Kind of. Barely. Okay, so it wasn’t much better and was going to cost him a fortune, but whatever.
Rolling his eyes at his own thoughts, he started down the long staircase until he skipped the last three steps and landed on the pavement, knees bending slightly to take the force of the fall. Ah, fresh air. Avel breathed in deeply, inhaling the toxic scent of the city he lived in. A beautiful place, it truly was, at least, when it didn’t smell as awful as it could in the afternoon. Looking to either side of himself, down either side of the street, he darted across, standing erect on the other side and brushing himself off. Well then, that much was done. Now there were just a few blocks left until he arrived on the school grounds.
It was a matter of minutes before he was at the lovely school, staring up at it in all it’s magnificent glory. What was it called again? Oh, yes. Hotaka. Damn. He’d wished to have been allowed to work at Sinful Wings, where he would have a chance of being with his beloved Nox, but it looked like that chance had passed him by. And anyway, Nox probably wouldn’t even be able to keep himself in the same room as Avel, no matter how hard he tried. The man sighed softly. Curse his foolish choice of actions so long ago. He had scarred such a delicate little thing for life and now paid for it with the curse of never being able to be in a true relationship with the younger male.
A wolf whistle came from behind him and his eyes narrowed. God, that was the most annoying thing about having long hair like his. Men seemed to think him a female, and he did not like that in the least, though he’d thought about using it to his advantage before. He rounded on the man and growled somewhere deep in his throat, eyes menacing. The man, who was further down the street and walking toward Avel, widened his eyes and tugged his friends shirt. The two of them turned and darted back down the road. Well, that took care of that.
“Let’s get to it, then!” he exclaimed to himself, throwing both arms in the air without at all dropping the medical bag. As he walked onto the ground themselves however, his face faltered. The place was practically empty! How was that, a lovely new school, Avel had awoken late, and now he was still early! That or it was a school full of bookworms and people like Nox, quick to learn things out of text books but not fast on their feet. He sighed. Well, that would easily make the year seem like forever, wouldn’t it?

Jakken Windsor swept his hand through his dark, messy black hair, staring doubtfully at the wrought-iron gates of the school that was to be his home. For some reason, he had been hoping that it would be more... well... impressive. Not that the school wasn't magnificent. Much better than anything he had ever seen, that was for sure. But he had been waiting for so long to get in, building dream on top of dream about how wonderful it would all be... Only to find that the architects' imaginations weren't as splendid as his. "Well, that's what you're used to, eh, Jakken?" He muttered to himself, shifting his black messenger bag slightly on his shoulder. "How fortunate. You brought a little piece of home with you here." This last part, of course, was layered in sarcasm. Nonetheless, he jammed his hands in the pockets of his black jeans and started off through the gates.
He couldn't help thinking that this was going to be the start of a new life for him. That these steps he was taking were the beginning of a new era for him. Something better than the tragedy he was used to. But he knew that he had to bury these hopes deep within himself. After all... he would just be let down again...
...Right?
