There are several reasons why...
1.Some people just don't like be shot at a pointblank range and have a nasty welt on them. To stay in business you gotta have customers, and if you don't have customers becuase some people are playing rough you have no business.
2.Some parents will not let their children play again if there son/daughter comes home with a huge welt on them or a fear of the game. This also goes along with you gotta have customers to be in business thing.
3.The causes of someone getting seriously hurt. Wouldn't want another scar to the sport.
4. Pretty sure there is some insurance stuff for the field.
5. A lot of players today will whip around once you run by after the bunker and shoot you, and that usally causes some commotion of "Why the F did you shoot me after you were out".
6.If the person happens that is about to be bunkered is facing the the same way the bunkeree is about to come in they usally end up shooting at each other the you got the "I shot him first story". That too leads to argumetns that refs and field owners don't want to deal with.
Basically its about is not losing customers, no one getting injured, and needless arguments.

On the insurance part I can say that I talked to an owner of a Paintball field and he says after insurance he barely makes any money sometimes. If he allowed people to bring your own paint he would be out of the job. His insurance is pretty high since a couple of kids got hurt 2years ago even thought it wasn't their fault the owners insurance prmiums went sky high.
Those kids ruined it for all of us, now the staff there ahs to be a bunch of A-Holes about EVERYTHING. Can't blame them tho. Their just covering themselves.

Yeah, but still, you can get the same injury whether your shooting 50 yards away or five

Yeah, but still, you can get the same injury whether your shooting 50 yards away or five Yes but there is more likely to be better chance of injury at a close range. It just hightens the ratio of a chnace of injury and like what was said before fields don't want any incidents that would cause the cost of their insurance to go up. Rec-ball players aren't always exactly your most experienced players on the field, and they can tend to do some crazy stuff. As we all know by doing crazy stuff you have a great chance of being injured.

Nobody likes high insurance bills and rates. Plus, once the insurance goes up they have to cahrge more to play, that'll lose customers then the establishment is lost.
