This is a sticky question. One of many I hope to post to get this guild a lil more active. 4laugh So I don't know the laws in the rest of the world, but in the U.S. senior citizens are allowed to drive until... well basically until they get in enough accidents that their license is revoked, or the doctor says so!
In Texas they were thinking of passing a law that would require citizens of the age 65 and up to retake driving tests every five years. The program was called "65 and Alive." I thought it was a great idea! My grandfather's driving scares the s**t out of me, and we have to TRICK him into not driving. Like I'll say I need the practice, or my grandma will say she knows the way better, so it would be easier. We even have to trick him out of driving the sailboat! (dont get me started! stressed )
So my question is what do you think, if anything, should be done about senior citizens driving? Like what age should you be defined as a senior and what should you have to do? If there are already laws in your country or state or province, what are they??

Personally I think that everyone over about 50 should be required to have a driving test at a set interval of years. It's a great idea and would insure that people who are too stubborn to admit that they can't drive or don't realize their capabilities are dwindling are moved off the roads.
The only problem I see with it is that those people that are refused the ability to drive would be stranded save for public transportation, taxis, or family members. Of course inconveniecing a person is still preferable to letting them be a hazard to themselves and others.

Woohoo I can post again! Darned database errors crying
Anyways, back on topic. I think having to resit the full test (theory, the practical, the hazard perception) would be kind of disrespectul to the drivers. But, it is common knowledge your reactions decrease as you grow older. So maybe, yeah, at a 5 year interval. But the test should be watered down - the hazard perception, a bit of the practical (for example the eyesight test, and maybe a couple of reaction time tests) would be more suitable just to check that the driver in question is able to drive without being too much of a bother to other drives (slow reaction times, squinting to see junctions).

I think they should be allowed to take it, and when they fail, they'll realize that they shouldn't be driving at all. But some experiences I've had with the elderly driving make me want to just say no...
Example: when I was walking over to my friend's house, I was going down a hill, when this old lady gets into her car, and I'm assuming she's going to go somewhere, since it's parked at the curb. But then she pulls up and almost runs me over, and she gets out of the car and starts screaming, "What the hell are you doing, brat?! Let me back up my damn car!" I was like, THERE'S NO POINT TO BACKING IT UP, YOU OLD FREAK!
Then she gives me the finger and drives off. What the ******** is wrong with her? -_-;;

hahahaha, I don't know how many times I've passed some old man or lady barely driving down the road. A couple of times they switch lanes and didn't see that I was RIGHT NEXT TO THEM!! And then THEY get mad! I was already here! You're blind! It's not my fault!!! xd whee eek But yeah. Those written tests can be murderous! I think a eye exam, reaction time test, etc would be a good idea 3nodding It would have to be a pretty simple test. Maybe just driving around for 30 mins... but every 5 years is a good interval

But to have to sit a theory and a full practical would be just expensive and tedious.
