As a service to the guild, I thought I'd keep a list of bootlegging companies and places where you might find bootlegs being sold.

Never buy bootlegged merchandise, as your money does not go to support the artist!

Signs that a Product may be Bootlegged
  • It sells for a low price [often half of what a legit copy costs]
  • It has a lower quality [CD case discoloration, print defects, etc.]
  • Copyright/Record label information is missing/incorrect

Known Bootleg Labels
Miya Records
Alion Records
K-O Records
EverAnime
SonMay

Beware of...
AnimeCastle
JPopHelp
eBay

Trusted Sites
YesAsia
CDJapan
J-XYZ
Third Stage
Free Will America
JPopHouse
Tofu Records
Amazon
Tower Records

Never buy J-rock or J-pop from Vintage Stock. Almost all their stuff is bootleg.

it's almost certain that anything you get on AnimeNextDay.com is a bootleg (they sell Albumns and CDs, not just anime)

JXYZ is legit. I've ordered special fanclub only stuff from them before, and they're a fast and credible service.

Thanks for the info Sai-kun!
I've added a list of trusted sites to the first post. Some places charge more than others, but everything from those sites should be legit.

So far, I've ordered from Amazon.com. They seem fine. No bootlegs, even though I mostly searched Diru stuff. I bought VULGAR on there (Dir en Grey) for about $16 once. It was horrible quality, so I just got the money back and went for the next price up. It came perfect. So, basically, they have all different prices, some cheap, and no bootlegs.

Being as someone who knows music and the music industry pretty well, I can tell you that most record labels are just like that. If a CD is sold off there website or in a store, then it goes to the record label and not the band it self. That is the reason why bands tour, Since when they sell there merch at shows, that is going to be there cash. Bands like Streetlight Manifesto were crushed when there merch and money was stolen(it was like 80 thousand dollars worth of stuff stolen) and they had the hardest time time paying it off. I'm sure the industry is no different in Japanese culture than in American or European culture. All I can really tell you is to at least support the label. This makes the band more popular and gives you more chances of being able to really see those bands.

Though I'm not a fan of how that system works. It's how things are done and all we can really do is support in what ever way we can.

Well, I know. But I mean, supporting the label is like supporting the band in some way. ^-^;
