On August 24th, astronomers held a debate on whether pluto should be a planet or not

Officially, Pluto is no longer a planet.

"Pluto is dead," said Mike Brown, a planetary scientist at the California Institute of Technology

The resolution
The decision establishes three main categories of objects in our solar system.

Planets: The eight worlds starting with Mercury and moving out to Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
Dwarf planets: Pluto and any other round object that "has not cleared the neighborhood around its orbit, and is not a satellite."
Small solar system bodies: All other objects orbiting the sun.

anyways, Pluto isn't a planet any more. thought i should let you know. biggrin and Click Here if you want to read the rest of the article.

.. *reads it*... =O!

At least some people aren't happy with the voting... I mean. I would be to. I mean. Only 5% voted? o.o

Yeah, I think at least 50% or more should vote for it to be offical... 5% probley isn't a whole lot of people.

This I found interesting:
• Pluto's day: 6.4 Earth days.
• Pluto's year: 248 Earth years.
• Average distance from sun: 3.7 billion miles, or 5.9 billion kilometers.
• What's in a name? Pluto is also the name of the Roman god of the underworld. It was suggested by many people, but credit was given to an 11-year-old girl from England.

wow
hm. On the article of the site url link given. It says 12 planets. I don't get that.

Can someone explain? Is a dwarf planet a planet? And why have I never heard of Charon or etc? lol

From Wikipedia -
A dwarf planet is a category of non-planetary celestial bodies in the solar system defined in a resolution passed by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) on August 24, 2006. The definition currently only applies to the Sun's solar system.[1] It applies only to the English language, and the use of the terms may differ in other languages.

The resolution describes a dwarf planet as an object that:

* is in orbit around the Sun,
* has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape,
* has not "cleared the neighborhood" around its orbit,
* is not a satellite of a planet, or other nonstellar body.

This definition reclassified Pluto from a planet to a dwarf planet because it has not cleared the neighborhood of its orbit (the Kuiper Belt).

The bolded things are along the lines of what I was going to say, but couldn't explain it as well as wikipedia could!

Charon is one of the planets moons.

Don't worry, it's not final, yet. In fact, they are thinking of adding several more celestial bodies to the planet list....that's why the number 12....it's a big debate. Won't be over for awhile.

Eh. I read on the new york post that people are arguing about this topic still.

But people are saying that Pluto doesn't fit the new standards of a real planet and stuff. And if they kept Pluto, then people would have had to add other giant masses of rock and call them planets too. lol xD

Eh. Science these days. lol
