I don't know if it's just me, but the other day I was reading up on various threads and I expressed that I simply thought that Sephiroth was my favorite videogame villain, and almost instantly, someone commented; "Oh nooo!! Look out here comes the sephiroth fanboys!!". In fact, a few people commented that, just in response to my comment.

This isn't new either, I've seen this happen for other games as well. One game in particular was Kingdom Hearts... I remember the witch hunt a few months ago, where anyone who seemed to express that they liked the game, was called a fanboy or girl, and flamed.

Obviously, there are arrogant, obnoxious people out there that DO express unecessary amounts of excitement and antagonize anyone who thinks otherwise about a game. More importantly, there are those out there who are actually on the offense about games that they like / don't like. They would go into other threads, insisting that the game they like is that much better, and that would lead to arguments.

Essentially I'm saying that it shouldn't matter whether or not you LOVE a game, everyone has their own game that they could discuss endlessly (mine happends to be silent hill). Of course, the line is crossed when such fans are aggressive and insulting.

The point is that, before you label someone a fanboy, consider their actions, for me at least, I consider it to be an insulting label, and I'm sure others feel the same way.

thanks for your time domokun

I only really apply the fanboy label when it's obvious that they're irrational.

EX1: Sepheroth is cool. He's my favorite villian.

Not a fanboy.

EX2: SEPHEROTH ROCKS!! HE PWNS YOU ALL!!!

Fanboy. With or without mispellings and other such mistakes.

I also joking call myself a katar/Voldo fanboy.

Yeah, I know what you mean... That's what would bother me too.. There's currently a thread in the vg section that just says "PS2 ROCKS", and it just says "if u like ps2 quote me"... That kind of thing drives me insane. Though that's more N00bish than being a "fanboy"

agh.. I just used "N00b" that's a whole other can of worms... sweatdrop

That really comes with any word, slang or otherwise. You're going to run into people who don't use it how it's supposed to be used, or at least how its use is generally agreed upon. For me:

Fanboy. n.

1. Someone who is fanatical about a given concept: i.e., 'Naaro Yoichi is a serious EarthBound fanboy'

2. Derogitory. An above-described person who is extremely obnoxious about said concept: i.e., 'You flamed someone for saying "I'm afraid I have to disagree; Sephiroth is not the best villain of all time"? You're a damned fanboy!'

I may hate Sephiroth and all he represents, but (though I might mutter a few ahh...words and phrases originating from intense disagreement sweatdrop to myself) I would not openly flame someone who is reasonable in liking him just because they state such.

Fanboys and fangirls also protect the characters they love or the games. Same with anime.

Remember one of the kingdom HEarts threads? One got trashed, because it had rabid fanboys and girls threating to kill people who don't like this game.

The anime forum gives me a headach.

Of course.. vs threads also have some fanboyish answears.

If you have anything like.. "Link vs Mega Man'.

Fanboys will not give a reason why one character would win.

*shrug* That's just the way it is. People are assholes. It's the same way in the music community. If I say I like Good Charlotte's music, I'm automatically labeled a poser or a fangirl, despite the fact that I probably listen to a broader range of music than the people flaming me. My favourite genres are Ska and Swing, for jeebus' sake.

Some people just need to flame, or they might explode.

Personally, I wish they would just explode.

Should I make a thread in the VG forum scolding those who flame non-fanboys/girls?
PostPosted: Mon Sep 27, 2004 9:35 am

Ive found that many people use it as an insult when it is not neccessarily one. I admit that I am a GBASP fanboy. I love that thing. I however dont let that smog my few of the other systems. Thats when it becomes really bad and silly.

There are a lot of fanboys.... but what's worse is people trying to discredit the opinions of others by calling them 'fanboy,' whether that person truly is or is not a fanboy.

What doesn't make sense to me is the logic of this. 'Fanboy' simply means that this person really really enjoys, perhaps is obsessed with, one particular game/console/character/etc., correct? So basically, calling someone 'fanboy', is an attempt to discredit someone simply because they have strong opinions about something.

I wish this worked in politics. "John Kerry, you're such a friggen United Nations fanboy. Loser."

This is what I think. If you just totally love a person/thing then you're a fanboy/girl of person/thing. I mean, is it really bad to be a fanboy/girl? Sure, sometimes it gets a wee bit out of control, but there's really nothing wrong with it, is there?

It's picked up a negative connotation.

And a little out of control, no. But most of the time it's more than a little.
