I'm not very knowledgeable on the highschool theater scene, so...
How do you become a techie?
Is there a class? 'Cause I'm not sure if my school offers one
Do you just volunteer?
Do techies hate newbies?
Is it hard to learn?
Do you basically have to choose between performing all the time and being tech all the time or can you sometimes perform and sometimes do tech?
HOW THE HELL AM I SUPPOSED TO GO ABOUT BEING A TECHIE?
I'm so confused @w@
Help?
Update on the techie situation:
I didn't get into A Midsummer Night's Dream (well, I could have been a Fairy/Attendant but that's BORING) so I signed up to paint things, which should be fun x3

^_^
Usually there is no class. If you tell whoever's running the school play (or whatever you may have) that you'd be interested in being a techie, they will usually jump at the chance.
In my experience, techies are usually WAY nicer than anybody performing in the play. I don't know if that'll be the same where you are, but I'm automatically assuming it's a universal thing, dammit.
It depends on just what you want to do. Sometimes what you do can be very specialized, such as lighting or sound design. Or it could be a more simple task, like prop management. It all depends on what you're interested in. You may want to decide before becoming a techie, though.

It all depends on your school really. I mean I know my high school you were either a techie or an actor, you could really be one or the other. There wasn't a class or anything to be one, you just... were or you weren't.
I wasn’t a techie in high school, but I am one in college. Now in college, pretty much everything I learned so far I learned just from working with people that are willing to show me what to do. I mean, I've yet to have my lighting class and I can hang, general focus, cable, and color an entire electric on my own. And I'm not a techie all the time. Usually I audition for a show and if I don't get in, I do the tech on it. Or if I'm totally burnt out from being in the last show... I just go right to the tech part.

It depends on what your school has. If you want to do construction stuff there may be a stage craft class, but other than that talk to the person in charge of your productions and see what's available. It definatly feels better to be one of the few that can do something necessary than to be one of twenty of whom all are just as able to paint as the others.

My school actually has a technical theatre class, but I'm sure most don't. You usually just tell your director and they'll try and talk to you about it. Most techs don't hate new people, but you always have the few that think they know everything. Just ignore and try and work your way up the ranks (I managed to get into the audition only class after only two and a half years of tech).
Depending on your school, you may or may not be able to act and tech. At my school, it's very tough to do both, but it has been done.
Just try your hardest and don't be afraid to try scary new things... like using power tools (I'm deathly scared of saws.... hahaha.)

At my school, Techies are usually the apprentices of former techies, so you basically have to join stage crew and observe the techies at work, before long, you'll lern how to do it yourself. So just be cool, learn what you have to learn, lights, soundboard, the ususal. ^_^ Climb the giant ladders to the top, and help out. Thats just how my school works.

So... could I just do tech for shows I don't get into?
Or do I have to choose before the audition date?

I don't see why you couldn't do that.

Well, that's what I did : )
There was a tech sign-up list posted right next to the cast list xD
So do techies go to the rehearsals? O.o

Depends which rehearsals. At my school they don't go to most unless they want to and on wednesdays there is no rehearsal, it's just a tech day. then when we get closer to the show there are more and more rehearsals with techies.

that's okay!
How do you become a techie? Talk to your drama teacher at your school or other techies! It depends on what your school does.
Is there a class? 'Cause I'm not sure if my school offers one There might be. Ask around!
Do you just volunteer? You probably can
Do techies hate newbies? No way! If someone wants to learn its fun to teach them.
Is it hard to learn? No, especially if you want to learn and have a desire. It's creative and fun.
Do you basically have to choose between performing all the time and being tech all the time or can you sometimes perform and sometimes do tech?
You can do both. It would vary on the show season. You couldn't act and tech on the same show.

Yeah, I'm trying to be extremely involved in the theater department so that the director and colleges will know that I'm passionate about this sort of thing
I kinda iwsh now that I'd done lights, 'cause I have this whole vision for the play and I know the play really really well
But paint is important too
I see the Athenian court scenes as bright white, clean, lights all around
And the forest is dark and mysterious, with only dim green-ish lights and dim spotlights and long shadows...
x3 I love this play somuch
