The door was answered by a very baffled Remi. At first she'd been frightened, thinking it might have been Thorn, but one look through the peephole told her it was probably the farthest thing from that horrible man.
"Can I help you?" she asked, bewildered until she saw who they were holding. Gavin sniffled again before reaching out for her.
"Mommy!" he cried out. Out of motherly reflex, she grabbed her son from their arms. She looked at Gavin...and then back at her door. Wait. She'd put him in time out. Why was he outside now.
"Uh...er," she paused, trying to piece together the information she had until she realized she didn't have any. "How did Gavin end up with you two? And what happened? Why is he crying?"

"Um. Well. See. We were at Natalie's apartment - do you know her? - and he showed up at the door. So we were just bringing him back over. He wanted to be a... a... ninja..."
Stephen trailed off, helplessly. Matt looked like an idiot. This wasn't going to end well.
"And Gavin sorta tripped on the stairs," Matt finished, unwinding his shirt from around his face. "So. Um. We brought him back over here."
"It's our fault."
"You might wanna look at his wing."
"And stuff."
The two boys - about Stephan's age, really - looked at her helplessly.

Remi blinked as she listened to the too. Ninjas? What the heck were they talking about? And why the heck did they have shirts wrapped around their heads?
"I do know Natalie," she started held Gavin closer to stifle his sobbing, succeeding somewhat. "He tripped?"
She looked at Gavin with a concern, immediately checking for signs of bleeding. There were none that she could see, but when she touched the offending wing, Gavin cried out again. Not good. It didn't look broken, but it definitely seemed like he hurt it.
"Shhh...it's okay," she bounced him a little bit, and he quieted down again. See? Mommies always knew how to take care of a problem like this. Gavin felt better already, if a bit sore. Remi looked at the two men again, feeling like she was talking to twelve year olds. "And who exactly are you two?"

"Yeah, we were hurrying down the stairs - he wanted to come back home - and I think we went too fast."
Stephen stared down at his feet, looking like a boy who got caught with with fudge all over his hands.
"We're Natalie's classmates," Matt supplied. "I'm Matt, that idiot over there is Stephen. Good friends of hers from school. But she's not supposed to know that we were here. We sorta... let ourselves in."

Matt and Stephen. She stored those names away in the back of her mind for future reference. Poor Natalie, having to have friends like these. Hopefully they'd be more careful for whenever she got her own child.
"I'm Remi, Gavin's 'mother' obviously," she introduced herself, considering they were all exchanging names. "Why isn't Natalie supposed to know you're here?"
She hoped it wasn't for a bad reason. She couldn't have Gavin trapsing around with delinquents. Damn, even her thoughts sounded ten years older than she was. This whole mother business aged you a lot faster than you thought.
"Gavin didn't hurt himself anywhere else did he?"

"Well, like I said, we sorta let ourselves in. We did it all the time at her old apartment, and she didn't mind, but she sorta told us not to do it here, now that she's moved.
"Old habits die hard?" Matt looked sheepish, too.
Stephen piped up again. "We wanted to see her new place without her chattering at us and throwing stuff at us the entire time.
"And, uh, no, I don't think he did. But he did get caffeine and sugar."

"Caffeine and sugar?" Remi asked, baffled yet again. Gavin had gone all the way to Natalie's for a reason. Why else would a toddler bother to walk that far? And then it hit her.
"He wanted root beer didn't he," she said. "I told Natalie she'd regret making him one of those."
Gavin peered up at her with a guilty expression. Remi looked down at him with an expression that said, Time out until dinner. No sneaking out. She looked back at the two guys.
"Hopefully he didn't cause you too much trouble."

"Er, yeah. Root beer float. He likes those, huh?"
Matt shrugged. "No, not really. Except we were both sure you were going to bite our heads off." Like the naughty, naughty boys we are, he was tempted to add, but remembered that the last time he'd said something like that, a rather wicked-looking spike had almost been driven through his groin.
Stupid demons.

Remi blinked. "I've never bitten anyone's heads off, so I don't know what gave you that idea. I'm just glad he's back here. I thought he was in his room."
She made a mental note to start checking on him periodically. Still, she wondered how he made it out. Possibly the window, but that would take too much work for a toddler. Or so she thought. Gavin tended to be pretty crafty for his mental age.
"Thank you for bringing him back."

"No problem," Stephen said, laughing a little, and edging towards the stairs. "We should probably get going. Have to be out of here before Nat comes home. Nice meeting you!"
"Don't tell her we were here!" Matt added, then the two were off, dashing down the steps, fighting each other to get out first.
Time to make their escape!

Remi blinked again with a confused expression as the two of them scrambled down the steps. Well that had certainly been strange. Maybe she would tell Natalie they were here. Could be fun.
Gavin waved bye even though they were already gone, his tears finally dried. He looked back up at his mommy with wide eyes.
"Nuh uh," Remi said sternly. "Don't give me that look. You're in trouble little guy."
Gavin cringed slightly, forgetting that his wing hurt.
"No more sneaking out, okay?" Remi tapped his nose somewhat playfully. She couldn't be totally angry with him. She was more angry at herself for not realizing that he'd been missing.
Gavin nodded, though he didn't plan on following through.
He'd have to perfect his ninja skills of sneakery and see those two again.
