Whatever you do, do not get an Ibanez acoustic, unless it's expensive. I got mine for christmas and I barely even play it. I want to because it was a gift from my parents, but I just can't. If you get an electric, YOU HAVE TO GO WITH IBANEZ! Their electric guitars are some of the best that I have ever played.

From my personal experience (which is none hands-on) and observations, I tend to lean more towards Schecter on this one. I mean seriously, check out the Schecter Synyster Custom:

personally, I'd have to go with the Schecter Hellcat VI and the Hellraiser Tempest

Gods Jester
The best thing to do would be to go to guitar center, grab both of them, and check out xD. But no, grab both and sit down at an amp and just play. Then decide what you like best.

I'm partial to Schecter, however. I think they're far better looking/sounding/feeling guitars. Unless you're going for a signature. Then get a JEM cool

Monkey Grip ftw.
Personally I would go with Ibanez. It seems like every Schecter i've played sounds like twangy crap with no bottom end to it. That's just me though. I lean towards heavy bass sound.

Schecter. The best thing about ibanez is their necks. They have great neck profiles. However, for the product they offer, you get way more for your money from schecter's line. On your average 4-700$ ibanez, you'll get a mediocre trem (the new edge trems), and pickups that you'll most likely be dying to replace. At the same price point (esp. used), schecters come with real floyd rose trems and often really nice duncan pickups. They also have a wider choice in body wood. a good 80% of all ibanezes are basswood, which is a very dull, lifeless sounding wood (In my opinions). Schecters generally have mahogany, ash, etc. If you want a great metal axe for under 700$ new, check out the Schecter C1 Hellraiser or Schecter ATX Blackjack. Both are amazing guitars.

I played ibanez guitars for about 5 years, only. Then I realized i hated basswood, but as a 7 string player, my options were limited. Then i got a schecter C7 Hellraiser, and it crushed all my ibanezes. so i immediately sold them. In the past, i've owned Ibanez's RG1527, RG1077XL, RG7620, 4 different Ibanez Universes, RG350, and in my time working at a music store, had hands on experience with most of the ibanez line between 2004-2006. Currently, my 2 electrics are the Schecter C7 Hellraiser and the Jeff Loomis Sig. Model. The quality, and fretwork are beyond even my old 90's Universes, and both were each less than half the cost of a new Universe.

The one 6 string ibanez i STRONGLY reccomend, however, is the RG3120. Nice body, cool maple cap, actually came with a great body wood & pickups too. They stopped making them around 2003-2004 though.

I'd say Schecter. I perfer Seymour Duncan pick ups and a Mahogany body over Dimarzio pick ups and Basswood bodies on most Ibanez. And in every amp I've used (from a Line 6 to a Vox) I've loved the Schecter sound and feel. I've always found a problem with Ibanez. Schecters for me have been perfect.

I own a Schecter, and I like it so naturally I'd lean towards that but I've never had any hands on experience with an Ibanez, granted I've heard nothing but good things about them.

Definitely try them both out to see which one you personally enjoy playing more; but, having played both, I would definitely go with Ibanez any day! RG550's are relatively cheap, sound good and play incredibly well -you might look around for one of those!
