I'm in my drawing class in school now, and am having real trouble with shading. I have a 2H pencil, a good eraser, a blending stupid, a 2B pencil, and drawing paper.

Any tips? Especially for spheres.

Hmm the best way to learn how to shade is to copy someones work (but then don't claim it's you of corse) or to draw form the picture or of corse from the model. There are a lot of tutorials around the net that tell u about the shading - like this one for example http://elfwood.lysator.liu.se/farp/art.html

About the pencils - It's the best to have a almost whole set like > 6B, 4B , 2B, HB, 2H, 4H

I'm planing on making drawing portrait tutorial where the shading of the face will be told. So if u are interested just tell me and I'll sent it to you once it's finished.

another way to study shading is by paying attention to how the light is distributed in nature such as plants and trees. it is not abad idea to invest in a proper set of pencils... they are definately worth it! Another trick which is very handy is to do is find Black and white pcitures and copy them for the shading is already there.. once you become cofident with that, you can then start to add colour... its a really handy way of training your eye!

My professor said something to me that might help you ...

"You have 1,000,000 bad drawings to draw ... the sooner you get those over with, the sooner you will get to the good ones."

Basically just keep drawing and looking back to see what works for you and what doesn't. Do what works, don't do what doesn't.

I thought I was horrible at shading, turns out that I just needed to keep doing it over and over again.

Shading? Uh... You must maintain the balance everytime... I'm not a good artist but my bro trust me in the shading part... Its like coloring something using a pen... My tools are colored pencils and some color points! If you want to achieve good shading, you don't need anyone to let them teach you: you yourself can do it! Just imagine that even though its stupid its still art you know!

I agree with basically what everybody here said.
And I find that shading w/ the softer pencils.. the "B"s works best for me...i'm not fond of the hard ones... too light, and hard to erase.. >__<

Simple shapes!!!!! Just seperate everything into simple shapes like a human body, While using the circle and cylinder technique you can see how to shade the body parts by knowing how light would hit a ball or a cylinder. Also find the best technique for each part of a shadow, some might need the trusty blinding stump and others might just need some simple cross-hatching. But most important of all Choice a light sorce and keep everything to it! don't have to light sources in a portait, but a scene with many things going on might get harder. If your new to shading stick to one light source and make sure you dont have glars going in different directions. I'll show you what I mean in a later post g2g!!

you need to learn the basic rule of shading: you need to control how you are pressing the pencil.
