Pippin tenses up as if he's going to say something as a quick reply, but his shoulders drop on a second thought. "No," he admits quickly, balancing a jar of peanut butter against a packet of marshmallows. "Maddy - she's my sister's eldest - usually does the shopping, s'well as the cooking. And before that it was my wife."

Moving her hands up to the closest bare wire of the cart, April curls her fingers against it, planning on an escape. The cart immediately reacts by tipping its weight along with the toddler, the pile threatening to topple.

Pippin's hands shoot out instinctively, having had quite a while to get used to the things his overly curious daughter can manage to get herself into, or in this case out of. Slipping her out carefully, the cart almost breathes a sigh of relief at the excess space provided when the toddler is expelled. Her fingers grasp the fabric of Pippin's coat, and it seems the girl doesn't even seem to acknowledge the danger she would have been in.

Sighing quite audibly, he's inwardly surprised with himself at how he managed to avert that situation. More than likely, or at least most days he can recall, he would have made the accident even worse while interfering. Raising his eyes to DS again, his cheeks visibly redden from the interruption.

"Help? Help would be good, oh, yes yes. I don't even remember the last time I came to one of these places..." He murmrus something into April's ear, pressing his lips on the top of her head in a peck of a kiss. "I mean, maybe I've gotten a little carried away, but most of the stuff I picked out should be non parishables. Kinda. Mostly."

He scans the cart for a quick lookover, nodding to agree with his own statement. "Though, if you'd allow it of course, we could check out together. I'm well-to-do money wise, rest assured, but those House Devil-Monkeys have no interest in money value to save my place. I know, I already tried.."

Sighing offhand, he gently bounces April against his coat. She has her head against his chest, eyes closed as her ear focuses on the sound of his heartbeat. His higher hand presses subconsciously onto her shoulder, continuing to hold her firmly against his person. "I understand how people get touchy about receiving money favours, but rest assured all the inheritance money is plenty clean."

He laughs here at his own secret. They can't call his money dirty money, nono! He'd hand washed and blow dried all the bills himself!

Hit the nail on the head, it seemed. DS attempted a sage nod and ended up with something that may have passed for one. "I could tell. Of course, I'm still getting a little used to this particular store. We, eh, moved a few months ago. Still, it does have most of what one needs."

Her cart was evidence of this. It was only half full, but an excellent example of the variety the store offered. Baking supplies such as flour and sugar were plentiful, but there was also a bunch of bananas, a few tins of sardines, and upon a certain pregnant woman's request, a large jar of pickles. And of course, the freshly sliced cheese.

"Non-perishables are an excellent idea. Foods that come in cans have a long shelf life, though they usually need some spicing up when cooked, since Spaghetti-O's can get pretty tiring. Pasta's another good option, as is having the raw materials for baking. And for junk food, you can't beat microwave popcorn."

At the mention of the checkout, she blushes slightly. Letting someone else pay for her own food would be wrong, criminal. She should refuse, kindly, bur firmly.

"Actually, that would be a big help... I do some freelance work, for a few shops and a library, but business has been pretty slow lately. Even with the help my family gives, things are tight."

As soon as the final words are out of her mouth she lets her head drop onto the cart handle. Hard. Idiot. Not only did she expose a weakness and make the man pay for her groceries, she practically forced her life story on him.

Pippin erupts into giggles - not even laughs, but pure giggles - at the woman's reaction to his offer. Adjusting the angle of his cart so he can lean the toddler and his waist against the handle while rummaging, he produces four hundred dollars in crisp bills, handing them over between two fingers.

"Enjoy yourself!" he exclaims with a grin, leaving the wallet out in attempts to save him time fumbling during the trip to checkout. His watch is exposed due to the awkward balancing act he has to perform - toddler, wallet, cart - and with a glance at it, he changes pace. "I most certainly have driven myself off schedule, pleasantly enough. Whoever likes schedules, anyway? A waste of time to make them, alotting times for every action. It's too rigid for my tastes."

Holding the wallet under his chin, he manages a flutter of fingers in a wave before readjusting the position of the now fast asleep April. With her pressed against his shoulder, the wallet semi-secure under his pointed chin, he flashes some pearly whites and calls out with a brief, "So long!" on his way to the cash, left rear wheel of the cart squeaking noisily until both the man and the cart disappear from sight.

Blink. Blink. Blink a' blink. "Sir, wait just a-"

It was too late. He was gone. And she was standing alone in front of the cheese counter, with a scrunched up address in one hand and four hundred dollars in the other. Enough to keep her family well fed for two weeks. And that was saying something.

There was only one thing to do about it. Such kindness always had to be repayed, and she would be working back this debt for quite some time. She would simply have to pay them a visit and insist that she work to pay them back. Kindly but firmly, and she would have to do it right this time.

Shoulders slumped, DS pushed her cart towards checkout. Even though she hadn't finished her list yet, she was in no mood to continue shopping. Besides, they could do without pickles and coffee for a few days.
