I have been thinking heavily about becoming a Vegan. The choice has
come from mostly a vanity point of view, but also a health wise point of
view. I've been overweight my whole life and I've recently taken up
exercising because someday I would like to achieve my lifelong dream of
being slender. I've considered becoming vegan because this would help
shape a guide for me to eat healthy.

I pose this question to you all; whether vegetarian or vegan, what are
some tips you could offer for snacks and such to help a fellow loli out?

Bein vegan is a lifestyle is well. It means no animal products or biproducts whatsoever, food or otherwise (including film, cars, clothing, etc). No eggs, milk, or honey. Which I find tough (although I don't like milk anyways but do enjoy mocha or vanilla flavoured soymilk, Silk really is the BEST brand, even before the cute cow commercials).
Which I find to be impossible in America (but maybe you live somewhere else).

As for going vegetarian, go for it. biggrin And if you can become a true vegan, I'll secretly envy you.
Whne I went vegetarian I lost about 18 pounds. But it takes a lot of effort, and can be pain when you go out to eat (being a vegetarian doesn't just mean eating salads D< ). A lot of Chinese and Thai restuarants offer to make most of their dishes with tofu (but usually not soups since they usually use chicken stock).
In the Tea and Recipes section, I've listed a few vegetairan recipes if you care to cook (a lot of 'em are on page 2).
For reading, I recommend getting Being Vegetarian for Dummies. I got it after becoming vegetarian. It goes in depth on how to slowly or quickly go vegetarian, what some secret animal ingredients in products are, meal planning, and how to keep yourself healthy.

I'm 5'3" and am usually about 127 lbs. Still a lil' overwieght, but I don't exercise at all, so it's to be expected. :3

Good veggie brands to buy are Quorn, Yves, and Gardenburger. Boca is NASTY, and Morningstar is only good for "buffalo wings" and "corn dogs".

I think eating right and exercising would do the trick. But if you get like cravings, here are some tips:
1. When you are looking for something in the fridge, get a glass of water. Water will fill you up and restrain you from eating junk food.
2. Eat fruits
3. Substitute junk stuff for healthier stuff (i.e. instead of ice cream, go for yogurt. It's healthier and it tastes good)
4. No eating after 7 o'clock. I don't know why, but that usually helps me out.
5. And lastly, DISCIPLINE. Discipline yourself to not got to the refridgerator every 10 minutes to make something to eat.

And of course, exercise. It doesn't have to be extrenuous, like I do (Tae Kwon Do twice a week, crunches, sit-ups and aerobics everyday......) but just walking for 25 minutes straight would do and some bending and stretches for 5-15 minutes will help as well.

But being a vegetarian/vegan is a great start. I acknowledge your switch 'cause I can't really stand eating vegetables everyday. I'm a stinky meat eater. xd Anyways, good luck and I hope that helps.

everyone's tips so far are good! also, remember to have soy products, and tofu if you like it! you won't get much protein from anything else... so try to have soy products and tofu to replace meat. or buy soy protein powder to put in foods, etc.

i'm vegan (lifestyle chosen mostly because i'm lactose intolerant and my stomach has trouble digesting meat), and i'm risking anemia due to that and the fact that i eat very little...x.X so be very careful about what you eat. try taking vitamins or something... make sure you still get protien and iron!! that's my only warning! >o<

Very much agreed. 3nodding
But there are alternatvies to soy/tofu. There's a brand called Quorn that's made of mycoprotein found in certain types of mushrooms as well as other vegetables. It besides being the brand name is also called quorn.
I myself prefer quorn over tofu, unless it's on a Mellowmushroom Pizza or from an oriental restaurant (I fail everytime I attempt to cook the stuff D: ).
Peanut butter and fresh spinach are also good sources of protein. I got to Subway and force them to pile on loads of spinach on my veggie sub.

Evelyn- Have you succesfully cooked tofu? If you have, do you have any tips? ^^;

I've been vegetarian for about 2 1/2 years, so I've collected some good tips. Hopefully these are useful.

1. Take a basic multivitamin. I take One-A-Day Women's, and it really does make me feel healthier. I don't usually get as much protein as I should, so a vitamin like that can prevent you from becoming anemic.

2. Don't fall into the rut of just eating Gardenburgers or whatever. Too many of those aren't healthy! Try to get a balenced meal for EVERY meal.

3. You will probably have to do a lot more planning meal-wise. Don't expect that a restaurant will have vegetarian options. This may mean you'll have to have a snack before dining out.

4. Go to a bookstore (new or used). Look at their cookbooks, and find one you like. Having a good vegetarian cookbook is very helpful.

5. Altering recipes can be very helpful. If you like something that has meat in it, think about how you can replace it with a non-meat product. Also, when dining out, you can order dishes without the meat.

Having a non-meat lifestyle can be difficult at times, but it's helped me become healthier, and I've discovered many new types of foods. If you want any more advice, pm me!

I really like Quorn. You can even buy 'vegetarian bacon' xd
It's important how you cook things though. Like frying stuff is worse for you than cooking it other ways, or whatever (I don't really know much about cooking, I'm just pointing it out).
Japanese food is good for you. Snacks like rice balls with sesame seeds and the ones with seaweed round the outside and vegetables on the inside are good for you.

A word of advice. Excercise is good but if you excercise don't even think about cutting out carb intake, or else you will hae no energy. Bread and other carb containing foods are the basis of the human diet. That atkins thing was a scam.

If you want to loose weight eat complex carbs found in whole grain foods. Stay away from white bread and pasta. And remember to get enough protien too. I suggest vitamins because protien is found in meats. Also, eating fish is a good idea even if you are a vegetarian because fish is one of the best foods for you.

Basically, if you want to turn vegan, I say go for it, just make sure you are still getting the proper ammount of vitamins and things found in other foods.
