I'd say Cloud Cid and Tifa just because they have the Limit Breaks that really pack on damage...all of which do more than 9999

I agree with what a lot of other people said. There is no best just preferences. All the characters can be good. I use cloud, cid, and one other that is different every time i play the game. I don't like vincent because of his limit, so i don't use him. But its still a preference

Cloud barret and red. I would use clouds omni slash on seph at the end of the game when hes in his final form. then summon nights of the round but have quadra matera with it and it would summin mights of the round 4 times. hitting seph for 999 each night each summon the dammage was insane. an so was the omni slash cause i had cloud hitting 9999

I'm a Very, Aesthetic person, So my party has to look good. (Probably the reason why I never got far in the game) But yeah.. So I would have, Cloud (gotta love The chocobo hairstyle), Nanaki, (because i have a weak spot for 4-legged furries), and Vincent, (gota have the dark broody guy)
I never really cared much about limits or materia because im not a strategic person.. so yeah..
I never liked Aeris, my personal feelings. then that chick who did her voice.. yeah.. Put me off forever (thats beside point)
Yuffie is too annoying
i never really got what cait sith was.. so i just stayed away
cid scared me..
gun, oops sorry barret.. yeah.. to bulky (i have always called him gun, because of his arm.. and i still do call him gun)
tifa tifa tifa.. love to cosplay her.. BUT dont like her fighting style

It is all up to preference, however I prefer Cloud, Vincent & Nanaki.

My party changed several times throughout the game. I used Cloud, Aeris and Caith Sith for a while. I then read some walkthrough and found out that Caith Sith is weak towards the end of the game. I changed it to Cloud, Red XIII, and Aeris. This was my best party and I wished I could have kept it the whole game. After Aeris is longer in the Party I used Cloud, Red XIII, and Vincent.
I had to split both Cloud and Red XIII between attacking and healing, since I had no dedicated healer any more.

i normally used cloud, cid, and vincent.
i used cloud because you have to, cid because i found him to be funny with his constent cursing and vincent because his limits have saved me many times

I dont think there is a particular best combo, I tend to use cloud (obviously), Tiffa and vincent, so that one of my characters covers long range whilst the other 2 deal with close range. I also train Red alot as an all-rounded charachter, magic, attack the lot.
I almost never use Barret, Yuffie or Cait Smith.
I completed the game once with Cid as one of my main charachters.
Really I would surrgest use whoever you want, but Vincent I find is a character I always tend to use.

Really, there is no best party because most of their abilities are determined through Materia, but I usually use Cloud, Vincent, and Tifa.

I use Cloud, Red XIII, and Barrett. Cloud cuz I have to, Red XIII cuz I think his Cosmo Memory limit break is B.A. and Barrett cuz he does a lot of damage when he gets a crit.

I used Cloud, Aerith, and Red as my main party. You know, Aerith isn't a bad choice for the first disc. Her Healing Wind was extremely useful for some of those battles, and Seal Evil did wonders on some tough enemies. Also, before I went to Gold Saucer, I had almost all her limit breaks. Plus her deathblow makes a pretty sweet sound. Cloud was an obvious choice and Red was just friggin' awesome. When Aerith left, I used Cid or Yuffie because of Yuffie's Heal Tranquil and Cid's personality.
