I've been wondering about this... even though mine works in my signature, it always says I have 0 gold on my profile. I even remade it a couple of times, and it still says I don't have any gold going toward my quest.
Hmmm, that IS weird! And I notice it's got different totals on your profile versus your signature, but maybe the difference between what you've earned and what you need is the total on your profile, and that way people can't just look at your profile and see how much gold you have? That's a smart way to do it if it was intentionally that way.
Oh. No nevermind, the totals don't seem to add up that way. neutral
