I agree with lil punk. It's about eating right.
I see no problem with having carrots as a snack, but having potato chips as a snack between every meal wouldn't help at all.
Another thing to try is to drink water. My older sister (she's a doctor) pushed out whole family to drink at least 4 bottles of water a day. My younger sister stopped smelling bad after sweating so much (she is a sportsy girl), I didn't get as many pimples and my complexion is very clear and even, my mom stopped being exhausted all the time, and my dad seemed less angry than usual.
I also had a junk food problem so drinking so much water helped me loose weight and kept me full.
Also the tip about salads depends. You want to eat healthy. So iceberg lettuce salads might not hurt, but they won't help as much. Iceberg lettuce is mainly water. You want to eat more green, orange, red, and purple things. White and clear things are mainly water and will keep you full, but colorfull vegetables and fruits offer a lot more antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins. These vitamins aid in bodily processes like metabolization and maintaining equilibrium.
You can never cut fat completely out of your diet because some vitamins and minerals can only travel around your body with fat. However, you can cut down on your calorie intake and do activities that cause you to burn fat. There is A LOT more energy in fat than there is in sugar, so this should help.
I volunteered at the hospital (as someone up there mentioned) and it did work. A lot of those wheelchair people are hard to push up and down the halls, and that should give you a workout. I also worked doing administrative jobs like making copies of schedules for surgeons and running memos and papers to and fro between different doctors. Most hospitals have more than one floor and one of the elevators was broken. It was so annoying standing around waiting for one elevator all day, so the stairs really helped.
Also if you're going to eat junk try not to buy the big bags. Buy the small 39 cent bags because those are usually one serving or less (no one past the age of 9 has a 2000 calorie diet, especially if your school has multiple levels). This way you will just eat one bag. If you have a big bag around the house you can keep reaching in and pulling out more junk.
So water, healthier eating, activity (might i mention that two of my obese friends lost weight with much activity - tae kwon do for one of them, and cross country for the other).
The last part is your psyche. You have to have confidence and be ok with yourself first before you'll ever start to lose weight. If you don't believe in yourself, not only will you just give up and keep eating junk, you'll be stressed. A stress hormone called cortisol changes the way your body metabolizes fat and lipids and instead makes it easier to move around carbs and sugars. This is why stress causes weight gain. You also need the will. If you don't have the will to go through with it, if you don't care enough to reach your goal, then forget it.

I've also struggled with my weight for years, and recently decided that dieting is not the way to go. I opted to modify my life style, rather than just one area of my life. I work out five days a week, and play tennis once a week. I've been doing this for about a week, and I've dropped four pounds.
Counting calories is pretty big for me. I found that by knowing how much I should be eating, and making sure I stay within that limit is helping. It's a massive change, and it takes some getting use to, but it's working. You don't have to count down to the very last one, but being aware of them is always good.
Also exercise is huge. I've been told that if you're going to try and lose weight, then to just work one area first, and then the other. I've found though, that when you combine healthier eating with exercise, you no longer want to put crap into your body. I am a cookie monster, and now I feel guilty eating them. If your body feels good, you want to keep it feeling good. You don't want to slow it down with all the crap that comes in junk food. You'll also find your energy level goes up a fair amount and that you can focus more. Exercise can be a drag, but if you find something that you enjoy doing, and the hours fly while you're doing it, then that's great. For me, tennis is great. Not only is it a massive stress reliever, but it's also a great workout because you're running around, and moving all the time. Plus it's fun, which is key.
www.fitday.com is a great website, which you can put all your food into, and it will count the calories for you. Plus, it has an activities area, that has pretty much everything in it. It even lets you calculate your daily activities, like grocery shopping, showering, playing an instrument... It's pretty fantastic.

the best ever way to lose weight and keep it off is to find a sport that you love and play it to your hearts content. don't even think of it as losing weight. its more like having fun than anything else.

I didn't take the time to read what other people wrote so if this is repetitive then i apologize ahead of time. I've always gone with the statement that if you want something good enough you'll do anything to get it and won't let yourself slip. Heres some things that you should keep in mind. Stay away from greasy foods. Eat meals regularly but keep the portions small. If you are in the mood to snack then snack on something healthy like a vegetable, fruit or saltless anything ... just don't let it get out of hand. Exercising is a bit*h, because for me its boring and like pulling teeth but it can be done if you have a friend with you. Take a walk with a friend and its fun every day. You could even take a walk to just clear your mind. Take your dog? Take some music with you? Make small goals for yourself. See how long it takes you to reach the goal and see if you've made any progress. For example if it takes you three weeks to lose the first 10 pounds and only two weeks to lose the second ten pounds this is mass progress. Celebrate but no with food. buy yourself something, be happy. losing weight is difficult, as you've already found but its really based on determination. don't depend on anyone else but yourself. you must believe that you can do it before you have good progress. good luck. i believe in you.
